Welcome!

Welcome to my offsite-to-neopet port. I used to host all this on my own domain, www.fishslap.co.uk, but recently this info has started to feel a bit out of place, while still being useful.

So, what to do? I don't want another domain, and I don't want to draw attention away from my other things which I prefer. And therefore I have decided to lump the whole lot onto a petpage, using a code that I've been perfecting that give the appearance of lots of pages.

Should you have ever been looking for graphics, or guides (really good ones, not rubbishy) then you have arrived at the right place. If you want to play a few games and watch some short animations, then fishslap.co.uk is also available.

On 24th December 2006 I aim to stop Neopets entirely; I shall try to get this mega-page viewed and used, and shall leave it as my "legacy". After then I won't be editing this page again.

Atm not quite everything works perfectly, I'll try to test everything before I go.

Pages of interest: Making a Website Guide, the Stock Market Guide, and the Magax Destroyer Guide have always been my favourite pages I've written, so if you're just browsing check them out :)

My Dailies

This page is 95% all for me. Feel free to use it if you wish, but all these dailies are in order of my liking, and my personal fave games and such. So if you like giant omelette or anything else I don't want, I'm afraid you'll have to make your own page ;)

About Me

Name: Call me Kester
Age: 14
Lives: I forget..
Looks: Average height, skinny, brown eyes, dead straight hair, reaches the bottom of my neck (anime legnth), some call it blond and others brown, I prefer brown.
Likes: Internet, drawing, being creative, designing, gaming.
Dislikes: Homework, neopet's unreactiveness, being frozen, cats.

My hobbies include coding, drawing, animating, and if you add them all together then you get game making too.
I started knowing basic HTML Feb '05, and by now am moving into php to make my site menus nicer. I've owned my domain name fishslap.co.uk since 27/12/05 (DD/MM/YY) and am looking to get a better host when possible.
I enjoy animating in Flash, but now I'm making games in it. I've always wanted to be a proffessional game designer, and with Flash proved I'm surprisingly good at it, so I'm on the right track :D
I also do drawing, for the sake of it. Art skills are a good talent in animation/game creation!
I've also written a couple of awesome plots, but never can be bothered to write them, because it bores me. I may animate some eventually. I've occasionally written a poem or too, and these are extremely well recieved though I don't really care enough to write them much.

Neocluedo

Idea: Neopet adaption of Cluedo. Acara, Bruce, Kougra, Lupe, Yurble, and Zafara are all possible suspects of robbing the Ruki that gave out the LDP prizes while she was on her travels. They could have done it in Terror Mountain, Mystery Island, Roo Island, Altador, Kiko Lake, or Haunted Woods. And they could have done it with either Grackle Bug on a Stick, Tombola Visor, Cheese and Salsa Pretzel, Large Giant Squid, Petpet Laboratory Map, or a Prismatic Sea Fern (items currently in my inventory, so don't worry if it would actually be possible with that item xD).

When you post a message that you may ask something like "Liz, do you have Bruce, with Large Giant Squid in Kiko Lake?" Your message must be more than one sentence, definitely not spam (those posting spam for extra guesses will be eliminated from the game), and either someone has to post in between your last question and your new question (any sort of post, guess or not) or a day has passed. You may choose to send your question as a neomail as well as posting it on the board so the other person knows they have been asked, though this is personal preference if you want to do it or not.

The person who was asked (in this case Liz) would say (if it were Xbox asking) "Xbox, I do/don't have one or more of them." If she has any, she should send a neomail to Xbox, saying any one of those she has. If she has more she can choose which to send. If Xbox has been told by people all of the characters other than Kougra, he would know Kougra commited the crime. Once he's worked out the place and item too, he can say on the board something like "I think it was Bruce in Terror Mountain with the Petpet Laboratory Map!" If he is right, the game ends and he is the winner. If he is not, he is out of the game, and other people know that at least one bit of his answer was wrong. If everyone guesses wrong, or if by Sunday the game hasn't ended, the game will end, with no prizes.

I will not be participating as I'll be ordering everything, but I will need to know who is so I can give people the clues and know they will answer any questions (if you want to enter, I hope you'll be able to get on almost all days this week). Neomail me if you wish to participate, once I have everyone I expect will enter I'll start it.

PRIZES?
I'm not allowed to directly say I'll give prizes because of neopet rules, but there is a very high probability that the winner may end up with 4 krueldor world challenge pieces (Worth About 60K!). If it was very close I may choose to split it slightly, so the winner gets 3 pieces and the person who was very close gets the remaining one.

Chia Bomber
Score 1300+
Approx time: Somewhere around 20mins, depending on skill.

This game is a challenge for you as far as avatars go, but the key to this game is knowing how it works. For the most points you must annihilate every enemy with your cannon and have four lives (there is a 100pt bonus per life remaining if you complete all 12 levels), though you have a safe 387 point margin from max score (see the trophy section at bottom of page) and av. This basically means if you complete the game, you can be with any amount of lives, plus still room for quite a lot of enemies to be hunted with mines. And if you have this av, you can be sure you have an avatar that requires proper pure skill, and there is no quick fire method for this. So well done if you have.

The Basics
If you have played the game for a few times and are good with the concept you are advised to skip this section.
In Chia Bomber you play as Geoffrey, and you are playing to eliminate the (not very chia like) chia bombers (which shall be reffered to as enemies in my guide). You may get rid these foes by either hitting them with a ball of mud from your cannon, or by using a mine to blow them into chia heaven. Moving requires use of the arrow keys (poke the direction you want to go and you go there) and the spacebar to launch a splat of mud. You may also create a mine, but though these give less bonus than your cannon, and you only have 5 per level, these are a wonderful oppertunity for killing larger foes. Why? They nullify any enemy in one hit, be they black or green (so whatever colour they are, if they walk over a mine they shall be gone to the land of milk and honey). Ideal for breaking into the last level then.
The difficulties are as follows:
Green: One Shot
Blue: Two shots
Yellow: Three shots
Red: Four Shots
Black: Five shots
By shots I mean how many times you must shoot it to destroy it.

This is the board you get once you have beaten the game or died yourself. The 'your score' line is how many enemies you have whacked times by 10, 'ballon kill bonus' is the amount of enemies you shot with your cannon times by 3, 'mine kill bonus' is how many enemies that were dispatched using a mine, and 'final score' is what it all adds up to.
My BKB says I have shot 89 enemies while my 'score' says I have shot 82. Why? Well, this is because when I have lost lives, my 'score' was reset to what it was at the begining of the level, though my BKB was not. This is because a level (with 8 enemies only; the last 3 levels have 9) where you only use your cannon is worth 104 points. If you die after slaughtering 8 (out of 9) enemies in the last level 3 times, you can get 12 points more than everyone else, even though you died more. So that's why tnt resets your score to what it was if you die ;)
You can see my MKB is at 0, because I don't thwart my enemies with mines because they are less points, and it is good practise to work as if you have no mines, though if you are not going for trophy you might choose to lay a few for safety.

The Art of Winning
Chia bomber is a game of skill, no matter how lucky you are you will still have to win this game with skill. But to be good, it's fairly important to know how your cannon works. Obviously, you press space to shoot with it. But it goes deeper than that. You may only have one cannonball on screen at once, and as soon as it hits something you may fire again, with no delay at all. The reason you can't hold space is because of the fact that if you miss, you have to wait for your cannonball to hit something before you can fire again, and if it's got to travel the whole legnth of the screen you have to do something miraculous to get out of losing a life to an enemy. But you can use the one-cannonball rule to your advantage, and get a machine gun effect by being close to things when you fire, because there is no delay. You can fire as fast as the frames allow a cannonball to come out and reach your enemy. Did that make sense? No? Well, put simply, if you are close to an enemy you can destroy them darn fast. Let me explain it like this:
In this screen I have an enemy about to come around the corner I'm hiding behind. The obvious thing is to shoot it, and because it is so close my shot hits it and fires again before I lift the space key. If this enemy is a blue or higher it means that this will give me extra hits, and if you hold it then you can waste large enemies with one encounter like this. It takes some skill to defeat a red like this because you have to shoot slightly earlier, and a black is very hard to wipe out like this because of the amount of times you need to hit them, and is not advisable (I would much rather face it in a head on assault where I have maybe a space or two to begin my gunning, so I can hit him 5 times safely). If you learn this technique well, you may also learn to lift the key just as the enemy dies, thus not fireing any into the wall after (which leave you with a period where you don't have any ammo and can't defend yourself). If you can learn to do that, you will have no time undefended and therefore be one of the best players at this game, and may well be able to get a trophy (see below).

Trophy Scoring
It may not look it but this game has a point where you can score no more, and that makes trophies become reachable. Here are the vital tips to make sure you know exactly how to add a trophy to your lookup:
You get 100 extra points per life - that means to get full points you need to type in the 'geoffrey' cheat for 4 lives, then never lose any. Type the 'geoffrey' cheat when you complete the first level, that way you don't risk being shot while typing.
You must shoot all enemies - If you detonate enemies using mines you lose points. So all must fall to your cannon! There are 8 enemies per level, and if you grimly reap them you get 10 points straight away. Along with that you get 3 points per enemy for shooting them with your cannon, so each enemy is worth 13 points. There is an extra enemy in each of the last three levels, making for 39 extra points.
The maximum score is 1687. Just be careful not to die and not lay any mines and you should get it. So can you remember it and complete it?
Credit to andy131985 for saying about the last levels having extra enemies

That is all for this guide, and I'm all out of variations on the word kill to throw at you. So go out and get that av or trophy, and enjoy it too :P

Make a Website

Glossary at the bottom of this page
If you intend to use this guide, read it right through, points are scattered everywhere! Even in bits about programs you don't have.. I haven't organised this article very well.

Do you have very little knowledge of html, but would quite like to make a small website? Finding learning to code yourself a challenge? Luckily for you, I've made this guide to help teach you how to make a page from scratch. Sometimes for me it's painful to see a website where someone doesn't quite know what they are doing, and have all the images messing up the text and unreadable colours on a complicated image background. So I've made this to help you get the footing you need to begin setting up your own site and turning into millionaires like everyone else :D

What do you wanna do?
For this guide I shall be making a simple but quite effective layout with a header, and two columns, one being for navigation. The whole layout's width shall be 700px, because the largest you can make your website width is either about 780px (this will fit in 800x600 resolution, which is the smallest resolution you really have to cater for. And remember you have to leave room for scroll bars and internet borders!). Mine shall have a bit of background viewable to 800x600, which is fine because the background is part of the colour scheme.

The Header
So, first thing I had to do was make an image that is 700px wide, and here it is! Note it's resized because this div is only 600px wide ;)

My (terrible xD) shopkeeper montage, notice how even though the background's transparent I've made the bottom the widest point (700px wide) so it will line up and sit at the top of the table well. This is 200px high when it's in full size, which is a nice size for an image. So how do you make your own and put it on your website? Well, first you have to make the image, I'll let you do that yourself depending on what programs you have. If your header is going to be on a background that isn't a solid colour, or you might change it at any time, then you'll be wanting a transparent background. I don't know how to do it, or even if it's possible in either MS Paint or Photoshop. But I do know it's possible in Paint Shop Pro, so for mine I made it in photoshop (and if you're making it in PS, try clicking the little f in a circle at the bottom of the layers panel after you've written your text, and then blending options to get some cool effects), and after I'd made it I saved it as a .gif by clicking the arrow pointing downwards when you save it. Here's a screenshot demonstrating it in paint:

You can either save your banner as a .gif, .jpeg, or .png. Jpegs have a very messy feel to them, I would never recommend it, Png will save a perfect copy with quite a large file size, and Gif saves it with 256 colours. If you have an adaptive palette like in PS or PSP then you can make a very cool image still, like the fishslap banner at the very top of this page, though if you are not using the standard 256 in paint then you'll get an effect like this:

This can be a pain, though for mine I was using the shopkeeper images which generally keep in the normal web 256 anyway, and I had an adaptive palette which catered for my rainbow writing too. So I saved it as a gif, because it's quite a lot smaller than the .png alternative, and having a website that loads fast is a major plus, especially to those without broadband. Only if your image looks terrible as a .gif and .jpeg, and you can't change the colours easily to make it work as a .gif, should you use .png for your main header. It's a large image afterall, so if it is saved as a detailed file too, it will delays everything else a lot and be a real pain. I think .png can be made transparent, but I have yet to find out how.

Transparency
When making your image you should make the background a colour that's similar to what you'll eventually put it on. Careful to only have it on the background, don't use it elsewhere! Once you have made your image, you might be thinking of making it transparent. If so, and you have PSP, when you've selected save and selected .gif from the drop down box, you can select "Run Optimiser". You can take out the background, which makes it a smaller file size, and work with whatever you've got on the page. You may need to make it have a slightly larger tolerance if you have some smooth lines on the border, but if you go too far you'll start removing a lot of colours. Use your own judgement. And what if you don't have PSP? Well, once you've uploaded it (see the next step) you can put it through http://stuff.mit.edu/tweb/map.html, save it to your computer, rename it so you don't have the silly digit length and then upload it once more.

Uploading?
Uploading is what makes you able to put your pictures online and it's quite simple to do. Once you have completely made your image and saved it, you can go to a site that will host your files and put it up. Sites I use and you might want to consider are: http://www.photobucket.com for simply uploading a few small images, and http://www.imagecave.com for larger headers and things. I like to use it in that order, because if I run out of bandwidth on one server, not all my images will break. They both require accounts, Photobucket is simple and reliable, while Imagecave can do large files. So once you have an account or whatever, upload your image onto it and get the url of it. Once you have your url, you'll need to put it in the following code:

<img src="URL.gif" border=0 height="Height">
The img bit tells the browser viewing the site that it's an image, the src says where to get it from, the border stops it having a 1px border around it so you can pack it as tightly as necessary (and it won't have a blue rim if it's linked), and the height tells the browser how high the image is. For a site with fairly large images it's good to have a height tag because otherwise you get the rest of the page being pushed down each time a new image loads, and if the site has a lot of images I for one hate having to chase the images down the page. So after all that we finally have a full top banner - but at least it's going to work, and that's what matters.

Go To Part 2

Whazzat?
Here is what some of the technical terms mean

  • HTML = Hyper Text Mark-up Language, what most websites are coded in.
  • MS Paint = Super simple graphics program
  • PSP or Paint Shop Pro = A good graphics program by Jasc
  • PS or Photoshop = A good graphics prgram by Adobe
  • Pixel or px = pixel. Your screen has many many pixels on it, if you have a look at the mystery pic competition, neopets have maximised an image so large you can clearly see each individual pixel. If you are making an image, normally you do not want to see this.
  • Resolution = how many pixels your monitor is showing. If your resolution is 800x600, you have 800 pixels for the width of your screen, and 600 for the height, and 480,000 pixels overall on your screen.
  • Url = Address basically. http://www.fishslap.co.uk is a url.

Make a Website Part 2

Part 2 - The dreaded code
[Read Part 1 first ;)]

So far with our website we have a header that we can use - but that won't get us very far. To make it a real website you need to have code that tells the viewer's browser what the site should look like, and where to get the images from. It must be noted though that when designing a website, how nice it looks is based 80% off the images, 10% off the layout and 10% off the table colours. If a website has amazing images then it can be original and even disgusting in how it's actually layed out because the images are a very strong backbone, and that is why I have made this tutorial have the image section first, because with no sort of header or background the layout will be plain and have to have a truly beautiful colour set to work. And it's always worth trying for all three, because you can never be absolutely sure the images will be awesome enough to support you deliberately trying a nasty colour scheme.

First planning
I decided that my layout here should be a simple to grasp 2 column affair, as this should work for most of you because it will support both your information and navigation/affiliates well. You could even use the second box to make a nice border if you wish to, it's certainly not impossible. To make it easy to see if what I was doing work or not, I used my favourite style sheet as usual

<style type="text/css"> body,td,a{font-size:8pt;font-family:tahoma;color:#202020} a{color:#101010;font-family:tahoma;}<br><br> h4{color:#000344;font-family:tahoma;font-size:9pt;}<br><br> i{color:#202020;font-family:tahoma;font-size:7pt;}<br><br> b{color:#000066;font-family:tahoma;font-size:9pt;}<br><br> body{background:#aaaaff;scrollbar-face-color:#F0F0F0; scrollbar-arrow-color:#FFFFFF;scrollbar-track-color:#FFFFFF; scrollbar-shadow-color:#C0C0C0;scrollbar-highlight-color:#F4F4F4; scrollbar-3dlight-color:#F2F2F2;scrollbar-darkshadow-color:909090;} </style>

I'll try to explain what all the CSS inside here means. The first line tells the browser it is reading a style sheet, and the last line tells it the style sheet has ended. Any and all CSS tags can be put between them, so if you then have some code to make the links invert on hover or something, you should not put it in a different style sheet but just add it to the main one. The last lines will always override the first ones in a style sheet, so in my first line I basically tell the browser the colour, font and size of all my text in the body of the page, in any boxes in a table (td), and any links (a). If you want to have more than one thing use the same part in the {} brackets, simply separate that object's tag with a comma. My second line tells any <a href=> tags to be a slightly different colour, my third line tells any <h4> tags to be in a blue colour and at a larger size, my fourth tells any <i> tags to be in a small font. This is good for disclaimers and such, like at the bottom of this page. My fifth line tells <b> tags to be large and in the font colour #000066 (a dark blue). My sixth to 9th line firstly tells the browser that the page background should be #aaaaff (a very pale blue), then says what colours the scrollbar should be. I'll let you discover which bit is what part of the scrollbar for yourself, but this is my basic one at the side of this page and such, which is a nice 3d pale grey affair. It's mine though, and though you may use my colours I'd prefer if you explored and found your own favourites :)

All The HTML!
So, once we have that, everything we type will look nice, and the page will have a background. First off I'll be slotting my image in at the top, and it shall be centered with the following code: <center> <img src="http://usera.imagecave.com/kollosal/complib.gif" border="0" width="700" height="200"> </center> This simply makes everything centered, puts an image in, and then stops everything being centered. Simple. Then, I want to put in my actual table below it, so directly below that I put: <br> <center> <table width=700 height=700 border=0 style=background:#ffffff> <tr><td width=600 valign=top> Here be all the content<br><br> </td><td width=100 valign=top> Here be navigation </td></tr></table> </center> And that's the full guts of the page. It puts a <br> in to make the text go down a line, centers everything, then adds a table, and then stops it being centered at the very end. That's all there is to it, that covers everything basic. The <table> makes the table and dictates a little bit about it. Every <tr> signifies a new row, and ours only has one row there is only one of them. Every <td> makes a new box in our table, and we have two of these at different widths. Note that the widths add up to 700px, which is the width of the whole table, so there is no wasted space. If you do not have a large header you could do the values in these as percentages, which can be more resolution friendly, but if there are a lot of images then it could be a bad move. My first good layout for my petpage (back in 'the day' xD) had three columns and was totally percentage based, and it rocked like that, being browser friendly and resolution friendly, however large or small your resolution is. Remember that your tables must always have all 3 tags, (table, tr, and td), otherwise they will break but might work in some browsers and cause all sorts of problems. In the box below is my entire page code. Remember to change the colours and images!

Using Your CSS
Now I've given you all your code, I'm going to do a slapdash way to use the CSS, and other basic html you will need. If there is a *, this is where you should put what you're told to below. <h4>*</h4> With my CSS, this is what the header for the page should be. Plonk it at the top of the content, and where the * is write whatever you want your header to be. <br> This makes the text go down a line, and it should be used under your headers, between any images that should go down a line, and will probably be your most used tag. You can put lots in a row to give a big gap, and it should be used to start all paragraphs. Remember in html, the enter key will not make the text on the page go down a line! <img src="*.gif" height="*" width="*"> Any and all images should be done with this. In the first * you need to put the url of your image (which you will need to upload), like described in the first section of this guide. The height and width attribute should be filled in to make the page load nicer and make sure things don't look ugly or unformatted if the image gets broken in any way. <b>*</b> With my CSS I have made it so this will make a good sub header. It's smaller than h4 but still large enough to be a good header. In the * write what you want the sub header to say. <center>*</center> This makes everything in the * centered. It should be used around lists, headers, or if you think your page is looking too left aligned put it around the whole lot like me! And they don't have to be with no html in between either, feel free to put the bold tags, images, or anything in between these :) <TEXTAREA>*</TEXTAREA> Between this on any petpage you can put code. So if you have a button for people to link back to you with, you can let people easily take the code with this. Note: This is a neopets only thing, not applicable to real websites. For that, take out the underscore (I can't type it here).
This should all hopefully be enough to get you started building a website!

There are two methods that all high scoring neopians use in this game. One is slow and tedious, the other is risky. Neither are perfect and I would recommend either. The first time I got this avatar, I used the slow method, and it took me about half an hour. The second time I got it with the fast method, though it took about the same time overall because I died at 640 and had to play again, therefore cancelling out it being faster.

The Basics
Does not include controls. If you have played the game for a few times and are good with the concept you are advised to skip this section.
You are that little guy in the boat, and at the start you are safe and don't need to move instantly, because you have to get a coin for a mine (your enemy) to appear. The mines come towards you, very slowly, and will explode if they touch anything. They always come at you wherever you are. If they touch you it is game over, if they touch another mine then both mines explode. It is impossibly to get them to touch the side (you'd need to position yourself over the edge and you can't do that). And by the way, you are allowed to drive over that island thing, or anywhere else on the map before you reach brown.

The Slow Method
This method is very slow and tedious, but it is the easiest and safest. Basically, you get the first two coins and get two mines. With those mines you simply crash them together, using your skilful powers of judgement.
Here you can very obviously see these mines are going to collide. Basically if you are using this method, this is the state you want to get your mines into (before making them kaboom!).
This one is where there is space between the mines, and this is what most of your time will be spent correcting. To correct it, you may either sit between them, but a way away, like I am here. You may also want to go near to one, making it go faster, and then drag it towards the other mine. Normally you will do a mix of both, which is ok. Just remember to always keep your speed up while turning because if you slow down, the mines will be moving faster than you. When they do that you are much more likely to die.
Here we have the second most common placement, which is having them a long way apart. They would be further apart normally but I had to make my screen a nice size :P The solution to this is simple; put your boat in the gap until they get too close and start becoming dangerous. Then you simply move away into the senario shown directly above this. Had I not been taking a screen I would have just driven through the gap, which is another option if they are too close for you to sit in the middle but too far away from each other to be well placed.

In this style of playing, a few tips are vital to remember. Firstly, each time you get a coin, you really must be moving fast, as often a mine will sprout in front of you, or even worse on you. If you are moving slowly by the time you react, speed up, and then turn out of the way you will probably be exploded. It takes about 10-15 minutes to get 1k here, so judge whether you can get that faster doing other games or whatever. You cannot get 3 mines to collide, it is solidly impossible. So don't try. You will also want to remember this method is boring. Therefore it is the option for those people that have never really got a respectable game avatar before, and it should be noted that when going for the avatar, you will be spending half an hour there. But a benefit of this method is this; when you have no mines on screen, you are free to get a cup of coffee, have a new window open restocking, playing another game or any other pastime you may do. Feel free to take breaks as you want, beleive me you'll need them.

The Fast Method
This one is my favourite as you may get 1k in 6 minutes and your precious avatar at about 10-20, depending on how rushed you are. It basically works like this; there is a maximum of nine mines on screen at one time. If you can get these up then there is none of the moving around waiting for the mines to collide, thus cutting massive chunks out of the time you spend playing. The real trick is to get your mines into as small space as possible (without exploding them).
Here you can see I have gathered the mines, and this is definitely the way you want to make yours. My cluster covers about 1/9th (a ninth) of the screen, and that is a good amount as it means I have 8/9ths (eight ninths) free to row my boat in, although obviously some areas are dangerous. I worked out my rough area by simply holding my fingers to screen and seeing that the cluster goes about three times height ways and three times widthways, if you were curious. To get them in a cluster, my personal approach is to just drive through the group to my coins and around the edges, and within 30 seconds they are grouped enough for you to drive around te edge completely, so making the cluster even tighter. If you want a more formal approach you may choose to bring out two and get them close together, get a third coin and join the new mine to the group and so on, but I find that to be a little lacking when I seem to die very rarely even when I'm being all speedy. Remember, if you are playing for neopoints speed is much more important than safety if the 1k score is easily achievable. At times the formal approach may be neccesary, like it was for me when I had over 700 when a whirlpool whiped out my cluster.
My main tips for this is careful when creating your cluster as if a mine pops out too near you you will explode (as I said in the slow version guide it is slowness that kills, contrary to the common belief that it is speed). When a whirlpool crops up your cluster will be destroyed, so you may choose to create a whirlpool early on (using the cheat that is typing in 'scallywags' while playing) but I never bothered. When changing the direction of rotation around your cluster always turn into the wall. If you turn towards the cluster they shall get faster as you get nearer, but you are getting slower as you turn. I'm sure you can guess the results. After a fun and easy 6 minutes this will be your reward.

Magax Destroyer
Score 3000+
Approx time: 20-30 mins

Magax destroyer is a very cool and quite fun game to play if you are good at it, but it is notably low on the user rated list, because it is a hard rated game and requires a few "skills" (listed further on this page) to master. I use the avatar permenantly. Does it really deserve to be so low on the user rated page? I aim to reset the balance.

The Basics
Skip this section if you are already familiar with the game
You are the wocky on screen, called Magax. To me, he is possibly the best neopets character... But moving on, it's you that has to get rid of all the ghosts on each level. The level will have a set number of ghosts, and it loops so there really is no where to run. You must proceed to the next level by destroying all ghosts, and as far as I'm aware there is no ending, you just keep on going to the next level, which will have slightly more ghosts than the last. You move with the arrow keys, and for some reason while you are facing one direction you will keep accelerating, until you hit a rather high top speed. Feel no obligation to go at this speed; slow down by pointing the other direction while you continue to move the way your momentum was dragging you. You can go up and down, and shoot dead straight in the direction you are facing. One of the three types of ghosts, chias, will shoot back at you, but you can move up and down to avoid these spitballs.

Play the Game
Magax destroyer is a game where every control has a lot of secrets. For the basic movement of left and right, you can and should always make yourself slow down by reversing, as the physics mean you won't change instantly, and so can use this to go a speed you are comfortable with, and where you will be able to slow down in time after you see a ghost at the edge of your screen. The faster you go, the more disadvantaged you are, so if you aren't pushed for time it would be worth killing your speed (like all the adverts tell you to!). With practise you will find what sort of speed you are comfortable with, and you'll be a better ghost buster already :D
The shooting is one of the least helpful aspects of this game. The actual properties of it are fine; it shoots at a nice speed and in a straight line that can hit multiple ghosts at once. Simple to aim and quite destructive. Sadly, it has a habit of either going through ghosts, or even if you turn as you shoot not appearing. These almost always happens in front of a chia, and often chias can require 2 or three hits to kill. I have listed a technique further on in this page for chia hunters. You can injure yourself by shooting a lot in a row, but chias aren't much of a problem for your health as you have a fair number of consecutive shots before you start injuring yourself, just don't use it like a machine gun. But should you ever encounter the glitch where a ghost remains on the radar after you shoot it, you can kill yourself and send score by firing a lot. But you can avoid this glitch in the first place by simply not firing at the beginning of a level until the radar has fully loaded, (with all the red dots on it). So though you may think you are getting a little head start by shooting before the ghosts are loaded, you can waste a good game.
the evil dots :K
Note the radar showing dots

Nox
Hubrid Nox is Magax's enemy. He is meant to be the one who got all the ghosts out of their graves to make an army, and sometimes he makes an entrance himself. Considering you are Magax, after all, it feels a bit petty that You can't actually hurt him. But here are the effects he does;

Fire, which will hurt you for as long as it remains. It does about half the damage of a ghost.

Ice, which stops you doing anything until it has ended. Note if you get hit by fire immediately after, you will have to wait for Nox to put Ice on your again before you can move once more. If you have not yet thinned down the population of the level, this can be fatal. And because it is Nox, this glitch is unavoidable.

Ghost enlargement, where all the ghosts just get a bit bigger. This happens when Nox just laughs and goes off screen, and it really is not a big hassle. Thankfully the chia snot doesn't get any bigger, so really you just have a bigger target to hit and more risk if you are iced.

Techniques
A wise person once said "Magax is actually quite easy if you don't get glitched." I have to say I agree, it really isn't as impossible as it looks. There are a few techniques that will get you through all but the worse situations, after that it is simply up to you to master the techniques and play until you get a clear run to the av slot. These skills shouldn't take long to get the hang of and though you will probably have a slightly different variation on them, but they should improve your game a lot. So what are these fabled skills I speak of? Well, my tactics are as follows...

As well as avoiding shooting upon loading a level, while starting you must avoid the ghosts at the beginning. My personal choice is to rise to the top of the screen while the ghosts load, because ghosts can load on top of you (and injure you before you have a chance), though this seems to happen more rarely while you are at the top. Once all the red dots are onto the radar, you can try lowering yourself to begin the onslaught_

Once you've finished starting (whatever that's meant to mean) you should try and carve a flat edge for yourself. This may not mean much before about 1500 points, but once you have enough ghosts to make going back down to kill tricky, you'll be having troubles. So once the radar's loaded, move very little from side to side and shoot a lot, so some ghosts will die and give you a little more room to maneuver and take out a couple more. Once you are comfortably in the center you can create a wave of death. (That sounds so cliche...) If you can take out the whole height of the screen of ghosts then you can go at your own speed and not be forced into bad positions. And if you take out every ghost you meet like this, your game will be shorter as you don't waste time, and you will be less likely to be injured by ice. 100% gain really.

The move in the picture below is my favourite move for avoiding chias. Basically, you go in a circle by pressing the opposite arrow to the direction you are going at A and B, and moving up and down, to create a circle. When you are shot at when you are in position 1, you'll already be in position 2 when it reaches you, so you avoid it. If he Mr. Chia shoots when you are in position 6 it reaches you when you are at position 7, and misses you again. This is possibly the route that will avoid most spitballs, and you just fire while you are at A (including when you have only just reached there; no point in wasting an opportunity is there?). Only the very fastest balls while you are very close will hit you.

Here is a set of screenshots showing the edges of all the ghosts. If you are travelling at a speed, knowing whether it will require one shot, two/three for jubjubs, or for the chias if it will need a swing round (shown above) to guarantee the kill. Knowing the ghost's edges becomes even more important as you go faster, with less time to react. And the more skilled you are the faster you'll probably choose to go, so it may be worth learning. Jubjubs go feet first, chias hand first and aishas antennae first, though not by much. They always face you so it's always the same side you see. See if you can work out who's who in this symmetrical picture!

There are two health orbs per level. If you shoot a jubjub, one of these is deleted (though you'll never lose them both). If you are in need of health then you may opt to not hit any jubjubs for this level though with your shot going past the edge of the screen this may be tricky. Generally you should try to lose less that 1 section of health and collect one health orb per level, so right until the av giving levels you will mantain a good survival chance.

Round Up

So what are the main points to be got from my gibberish?
  1. Practise
  2. Slow down lots
  3. Rise to the top and don't shoot before the icons are all on the radar
  4. Shoot once for aishas, two or three times fast for jubjubs, and shoot chias lot and lots, until they are well and truly into the afterlife (instead of flying round attacking us!)
  5. Get a straight edge to attack from
  6. Get lucky with the glitches
  7. Be wary of the almighty chias and use "the move" on them
  8. Shoot a lot.
  9. Don't stop until they're all gone; like the wise person once said, "magax is easy if you don't get any glitches"
  10. Practise more

This is the end of the article on how to rule the world... And that's how you rule the world Magax lives in. Seriously though, more people ought to enjoy this game and have this av. It's not an impossible av (like those smelly retired ones) and it's pretty rare and looks cool. I see so many people who have played once and got 165 it sickens me. I've explained to the best of my ability how to win, the rest is up to you. Play it 3 times a day and I expect within a week you'll have your av and never need to play it again. And I guarantee that if you try three times a day for a whole month you'll get it. Volcano run took a month for me to get a mere 300 points extra, but in Magax: Destroyer you'll do the whole thing. And that is why Magax rocks.

My reward for writing the guide - took 10 minutes to get this so I could have the rise-at-the-start-of-the-level screen shot above. First try. EZ.

The Neopets Stock Market

What is it?

The stock market is an awesome np making tool at your disposal. It sits on the games main page; see that tubby chia in a suit? That is Nigel, he is the stock broker. Whenever you sell a stock, he takes 20np from your profit. Lucky for you then, that this is nothing compared to the profit you will make!

Ooh, nice. How can I do this?

But you must first understand how this whole system works then, before diving in. You buy an amount of stocks. You wait until that stock is worth more than you bought it. You sell it. Simple, see? This means if you bought 1k of a stock at 15np per stock (this means you pay 15,000np) and sell it in a weeks time, when it now costs 20np per stock (20,000np overall) you get 20k back, minus Nigel's commission of 20np. This means you put in 15k a week ago, and got back 19,980np today! Easy money hey?

Rule 1: Learn what to buy

You may buy a maximum of 1000 stocks each day, and the stocks can only be bought if they are 15np each or more. You never really want to buy a stock if it is much above 15np because there is more to lose. So you won't ever want to buy a 40np stock because odds are it's going to come crashing back down again, and you will have a very long wait to even get back what you put in. So basically, you will want to take 15k out from the bank, find a stock at 15np and buy the maximum of 1000. If you have the np to spare, it is advisable you do this every day until your bank acount is as low as you really want it.
In all honesty, stocks won't be as profitable as they could be if you only have 1000 of them, because it takes a while to hit the desired selling point, and during this time you are making nothing. So the ideal amount you can invest begins at around 100k minimum (6666 stocks, or 6 company's worth) because this means you have more chance of a stock being at the desired selling point each day. So, if you fancy investing in the stock market, you should have 100k or ideally more np that you won't need in a while.

Rule 2: Diversify

Don't go thinking you can just walk in and make a profit though; no-one ever said stocks only go up. If you have a fair sized portfolio, you are going to have some that are below 15 almost all the time. So you need to diversify. If you were to invest in 15k of just one company (that's a 225,000 neopoint investment) and it went below 15 and didn't rise for months, you have just made a very bad investment because you have put in a large amount of np that you can't withdraw any time when it is below 15np each without making a loss. See the problem? What you must learn is that your 15k of stocks should all be different stocks, because then you get a wide variety of profits. It means that at any one time, you could have maybe 8k below 15np each, 4k between 15np each and 25np each, 1k just above that, 1k at 30np and maybe even 1k over 100np each! And even though the majority of those stats are below 15, we still have 2 (or 3 depending on your selling price) that you would be happy to sell, and make a healthy profit. While if you had all your stocks in one company, you would probably be more eager to sell and thus sell it at a lower price too. Obviously as your portfolio gets larger you will be getting duplicates, but that's ok, it's not like you'll be able to change every single day. But still, diversity has a key role in the road to stock success :)

Rule 3: Know when to sell

Selling is vital; no-one will make anything if they never sell! So when might you choose to sell? Almost every guide recommends selling at 30np or more, as that is 100% more than you bought it for. Personally I think that the 30np mark is a goal you should be aiming for, but you must work your way up to it first. When you only have 1000 stocks, you will probably be very impatient and want to sell it as soon as it makes 1k profit. But as soon as you have 2 or 3 thousand stocks you should really break out of this habit and set yourself a set selling point, my recommendation for that is 20np each. Once you have maybe 7k of stocks, raise the bar again and shoot for 25np each, and as soon as you feel comfortable you should move onto 30np as your selling point. If you begin to have more than 1 stock in your collection at 30np daily, you should move the bar up further still, because if you start selling more than 1k a day your portfolio will get smaller, and you will not be earning as much as you could with a small port. Feeling good about your stocks? Set your selling point at 45np or 60np! The wait for each individual stock may be longer, but by this stage your port should be large enough for you to have some stocks always in this range. And if daily you are buying 1k of a stock for 15np each and selling 1k for 50np each, you have a massive income from stocks alone.

Now fit it all together!

You should be buying at 15np per stock whenever you can using your daily 1000 stocks, and buying different ones all the time. And you should also have set yourself a selling point and only sell stocks if they reach that. And all that is good, until you look at how long it will take you to be able to even reap stocks at 30np effectively. So how can you get your stocks at the 30np mark, without breaking the bank and buying 1k every day? Simple. First of all there is a stretch of getting 1k of stocks every day... you will want to do this until your port has about 20-30k of stocks preferrably, though if you want a more solid start you may choose to go on like this a little longer. Once you have your port up to a good number, you will probably have a few stocks already at a nice price - those first few have had over 20 days to rise and fall after all - but instead of doing what you might choose and selling them all, restrict yourself. Pick the highest one and sell it, and if you have more than 1k of it only sell 1k. You should still be buying stocks daily, but every two days you should do this process and sell the highest. Because that means that if you are selling at 30np or more you are paying for the next two days of buying at 15np, see? As you progress in your stock buying mission, these stocks that are the highest of the 2 days will become higher because they have had more time to "cook". Once your portfolio is suitably massive, lets say it's at 75k (which means you've been doing stocks for 150 days, or 5 months) you may choose to set yourself a solid selling point again or maybe buy 1k and sell 1k every day. You'll have gained experience by now, and they're your np, so you can make your own decisions on exactly what you want to do. Good luck for you and you stocks, enjoy yourself ;)

Volcano Run

Sadly this guide is now redundant, what with the game being replaced and all. Ah well, it can stay, some sort of dedication to the game.

Np Rate: 33np/100pts (3031pts for 1000np)
Rated as: Medium
We say: Hard
Controls:
Click and hold the mouse to make the scorchio go up, let go to make him go down.
Spacebar to slow down for a bit
Cheats: Type 'lava' for an instant shield
Avatar info:
Volcano Run
Score 3500+
Approx time: 2 and a half minutes maximum ;)

Basics
If you have played the game for a few times and are good with the concept you are advised to skip this section.
You are playing as Glubgar the scorchio and you want to get out of the volcano you somehow got into. Unfortunately this is a never ending volcano, and if you have strong feelings against any sorts of pain then avoid this game, as it will always end in Glubgar's demise. You click to go up, let go to go down, and must fly along in your pointless journey avoiding all objects that hurt for as long as possible. You can press spacebar to move backwards across the screen, and when you release this it will give you a short speed boost until you are back on your original position on the screen. Some people dislike this tool, but I would be very suprised if anyone managed the avatar score without pressing it. (The avatar was what you wanted right)?

Burn Scorchio burn!!
Your poor Scorchio may be doomed, but thankfully the avatar score is a lot more possible. Volcano run is the most solid reason for practise in the book. The more you play it the higher your score will get. Unless you have played the original copter game you will have no ability at this game when you first play. I tried getting my (real life) friend to play it, and after about 10 trys he managed just below 500. If you're playing games for neopoints, then until you can consistantly get over 1500 then this wont be worth your time. Once 1500 starts sounding like a low score though, this game is very fast to earn your neopoints off.
You earn 20 points per second, and that means you get a grand total of 3 minutes for your avatar at very maximum (20 times 180 seconds is more than 3500). Along with that is that you can get blue gems that add 20 points - in other words each time you get one you save a second of your total time. So getting 1000np in under 2 and a half minutes is good right?

Routes
Hopefully I have now motivated you enough to play it, so what can you do to improve how well you play?

The first method I shall explain is path predicting. The route you fly along may convince you into thinking it's random, but I promise you its not. If you just have a little look at the game as you play it, you'll soon see a pattern emerging. If you can know what's coming up, you have an instant advantage. The main part is simple, first it begins with a wide section followed by a transistion that thankfully always includes a shield until you reach 2000 points. then it turns into a tunnel that first sweeps up before going back down, maintaining a fairly constant width. At the end is a dangerous section where you will get fireballs and a block in this small gap, though there are some gems in the middle that you will want to go for. Often you will have a very hard route, and I have lost a shield and my life all at once in this little area many times. A good tip for this game would be it's better to lose your shield than push your luck to the point of losing shield and life. After the transition is a large opening, and this will either go on to another transition onto the tunnel again, or a cavern. I advise rising to the top here because if it is a cavern the top is better, while it is no disadvantage to the transition as you can actually go quite deep into the top of the tunnel wall when it first changes. If it is a cavern you're in luck, this is the easiest section if the fireballs are in the right places. Just avoid the fireballs and nab the gems for an easy 60 points. Then it may continue to another cavern or turn into a tunnel again (with shield), so you will want to go to the top again. I think once it has turned into a cavern it has more odds on being another cavern than tunnel.

Tactics
You'll be wanting to learn the ropes with playing, as the most important thing in this game is to practise. You will develop your own style and these will evolve as you progress. So I shall be explaining my thoughts on what works and what doesn't, and you'll hopefully be able to use these to your advantage.
Know where you are going to fly next, and concentrate on it. So if you are flying through the tunnel and a block looks like it will be in the center when you reach it, then fly to the side it is moving away from. If you have a block just before the middle so it will be very hard to go either side, you should be able to have enough time to judge which will be easiest and prepare yourself. It is very easy to just fly without noticing, but concentrating a little bit more could save your scorchio. It's only a 3 minute game, it's not impossible to do.
Type Lava at the right time if you can. If you can type this without putting yourself off and dying, do so. If you can't, don't. It's not neccesary (I didn't use it), but it can be helpful.
Space your slowing down. You should be practising with the spacebar, else you will not be going very far. The spacebar is a very powerful tool for you to use, but only if used correctly. Should you have a block that will be hard to get past, you can easily space and wait till it's gone to a safer position before releasing and using the speed burst to make the time you spend around the block less (and therefore less dangerous). Some people do this for every block (so they get past one and begin holding for the next block straight away) though I prefer to adapt to each circumstance individually; something you can only really do if you are taking care with your game (now you can see why the first tip is important).
If you are using heavy spacing, this is the sort of route you will take. Dark red is just normal flying, blue is holding and light red is releasing. You will have this for every block to help you avoid being in danger for a longer time. Note that when you pass the second block it will be near the middle-top area.

Practise. Practise, practise practise. Practise more. I got a score of 3200 one day, and I still only got the av a month later. That was with me playing daily to the best of my ability. So yes, this is a pretty hard av, and will require more dedication than most avs you will want. It won't be an impossible mission, but it will need your time and effort. You never know though, you may be a natural!

Money
And now I proudly present the rewards you may get from this game; an avatar that few people will have, a grandmaster score, possibly an advantage in some 'better than you's, and the skill to get a very fast 3k, along with after a little more practise a lot of game challenge wins. So if you have the time and effort to get the av, it won't be completely wasted. Though we all know as soon as you get an av you never play the game again don't we?
