I don't remember that much. I do know that my parents worked at the circus. I also knew they hated it. My mother was a small, beautiful, sweet spotted kougra, taken in when the circus employees found her half dead, with me and my father- a large, tough, serious kind of kougra, by her side. I was still real small- only a couple days old. They could only guess how we got there.
At the zoo, my parents were tormented, and received beatings every day. I was kept locked away in some dingy old cage.
Anyway, one day, my mother didn't come to feed me. I had no clue where she was, so I wailed. I wailed, and wailed, and wailed, and wailed, a screamed, and cried, and- well, you get the picture.
That went on for about four hours. Finally, one of the tall... scary... clowns... came in, and started yelling something at me. I growled. I was only a few weeks old, but I was pretty angry.
The clown just rolled his eyes. Suddenly, he got a bright idea- I get that look all the time, so I would know. Looking around nervously to make sure no body was watching, he silently picked up my cage, carried me outside, unlocked the cage, and jerked me out of it.
I was pretty scared. I blindly ran in no particular direction. Not a great idea. Soon, I found myself lost in the woods that bordered the back end of the circus area.
And by then, I had been crying so much, I just fell asleep.

I was awoken, to my horror, by the feeling of sharp teeth closing around my body.
You'll make a small meal, you spotted shrimp," I heard the creature grunt. I hadn't seen much of Neopia yet, but I was able to figure out the obvious- a huge, grouchy shadow lupe was getting ready to eat me.
I let out a squel of despair. "Hush up!" snapped the lupe, but I didn't stop. "I SAID HUSH UP!" the angry lupe yelled. She dug one sharp tooth into a soft cheek; blood trickled down my face.
A brown uni, who must've heard us, came rushing into the picture. "Kala!" she panted in horror. "What are you doing!?"
Eating," snapped Kala, and dropped me down onto the ground lazily. I let out a pathetic "Oof."
The uni's nostrils flared. "Give me that poor thing," she said, and without waiting for Kala to reply, the uni nugded my small body over to her with a gentle hoof. Then, she picked me up in her mouth- much more carefully then the lupe did, I might add- and stormed away.
She trotted silently for a long time, and I started feeling uncomfortable. And hungry, as I hadn't eaten anything if two days.
We finally reached a large house. The uni walked casually up to the door, and rang the doorbell with the tip of her silver and blue horn.
A young girl answered the door. Her blue eyes looked at the sight curiously. "Chessie?" she started in wonder.
Chessie gently layed me down on the ground. "I found this poor kougra abandoned in Kala's woods," she said. I noticed how she left out that fact that the beast had almost eaten me.
Chessie, you know I can't take in another pet-"
Please, Eileen! Look at him! He lost his parents, he needs someone to look after him!"
Eileen looked discouraged. She stared at me for a long time, as if hoping I would stand up and tell her that she was right and leave. When I didn't, she sighed.
Fine Chessie," she grumbled. "I've been getting lonely anyway, with Kala in the woods and you in the feilds all day. I'll take care of him."
Chessie looked delighted. "Thanks, Eileen!" she exclaimed warmly. "I'll go tell Kala." Then the uni ran off.
Eileen nodded and closed the door. She studied me closely again. "You must be hungry- I'll go get you something to eat." She set me down on a pillow, then walked away.
I thought about all of these sudden changes. That was when I decided, as young as I was, that I wanted to get back at Kala somehow. I grinned, then stretched out on the soft pillow and fell asleep.
