Welcome guest

The Beauty Contest, otherwise know on the Beauty contest board as "BC" is a highly competitive competition where users pit their prized pets art against others in their species in an attempt to gather votes from the general Neopian public.

It is the pets competing, not the user (even though the user draws the Art) and you are permitted to enter all your pets (however this can get VERY tricky).

It is not for the faint hearted but it is definitely worth entering should you choose to.
Many regular users on the Beauty Contest Board are some of the sweetest users around, even with the large competitive streak they all possess.

In this guide, you will be shown the basics of the Beauty contest from pre-competition to post-competition, trouble shooting some of the most common errors & problems and the unwritten law of BC.

Always remember, read and follow the rules, never lose heart and most importantly, HAVE FUN!

All competitions start 3.15pm NST Fridays and finish the following Friday at 3.15pm NST.
You can view the final results here.

14/4/08 *NEWS*

As of April 4th 2008 Side pets can enter BC, however NP and Item prizes are gone.

Also note the start time has changed back to 4.15pm due to Daylight Savings ending.

If a screenie seems shrunken:
Click and hold your left mouse button down on one of the images then drag your mouse to your browser address bar to view these screenies in full size.
(if your using IE7 you just do the same except drag up to the tab section of your browser)

For those entering the Beauty Contest note that it is not purely an "Art Contest", it is a "Popularity Contest", since it is the general public that does the judging, not The Neopets Team.
Getting your entry out there is the key to winning, great art doesn't win on its own.

So naturally, users that are well known on particular boards feature regularly in the Neopian Times or host a popular Petpage accumulate more votes due to their entry gaining lots of traffic.

I have also seen users whine when certain users win on a regular basis.
Keep in mind, BC is a Contest and if you go in to win, you've already lost.
Besides, such users can only enter 4 times then if all their pets win, they are banned from entering for 4 months.
This gives a much fairer playing field.

Lastly, I have lurked on boards complaining when, in their opinion "Bad Art" wins.
In the end, I will say again, BC is NOT just an Art Contest. If you seek to have your art judged fairly based on it as an Art piece I highly recommend you use the Art Gallery instead.
The art here is judged by The Neopets Team and it is a true Art Contest.

This Art Gallery Guide is very good for those who need a hand.

The first aspect to think about is- Which of your pets are you able to draw best?
You can only choose out of the pets on your main account since The Neopets Team has forbidden the entry of side pets.
(this is due to the np/prize part of BC, you can't earn np on sides)

Another point to take note on is that different species have different levels of competition due to their popularity in the general community.
And the sheer bulk of entries submitted on a weekly basis.

The categories classed as most difficult by most BCers are:

  • Aisha
  • Uni
  • Peophin
  • Eyrie
  • Gelert
  • Lupe
  • Kougra
  • Wocky
  • Shoyru
  • Xweetok
  • Draik
  • Krawk

    And the easiest...

  • Moehog
  • Ruki
  • Jetsam
  • Buzz
  • Kiko
  • Techo
  • Skeith
  • Quiggle
  • Nimmo
  • Mynci
  • Tonu
  • Gnorbu
  • Ogrin

The only reason Draiks and Krawks are classed as difficult, is because many of the best artists compete in those categories.

Lastly, choosing a theme/creative idea for your entry.

Things that will get you noticed:

  • Original poses
  • Suitable backgrounds (but not always)
  • Bright, vibrant Colours
  • Neat and effective Shading
  • The small details that make your entry stand out
  • Creativity and Originality

And remember, put in your best effort, and have fun creating your masterpiece.
    Make your pet proud!

The most important part, because without the image, there can be no competition. To enter, fill out this form.

To make the picture you may use any graphics program available to you, or optionally you can draw your entry on paper then use a scanner to upload it to your PC.
Both digital and traditional entries are welcome to this contest.
The three most commonly used digital programs are:

  • Photoshop- needs to be purchased (free 30 day download is available)
  • Microsoft Paint- Automatically comes installed onto most PCs
  • Web-based Paint program like GIMP

You can enter your pet in ANY colour, released or unreleased as long as the entry is actually the same species as that of the pet you're going to enter it with.
If it isn't, when the competition commences, your pet will be disqualified. Keep this in mind when you enter your lab pets, if you enter your Gelert with a stunning Gelert image and the lab changes it to a Chia, your pet will be disqualified.
So maybe hold off zapping during the week your competing.

In a competition, entries are classified in two categories:

  • Anthro: Arthropod or "human like" generally drawn standing on 2 hind legs.

Care needs to be taken in this area of BC, many images get rejected or disqualified due to being "too human like
If in doubt, get a second opinion on BC by putting up a preview on a petpage.

  • Quad: Quadropod or "Animal-like" generally drawn on all four legs (this varies species to species).

Just make sure that the image resembles the neopet and not the real life animal the pet is based off.
Your entry MAY be rejected if it resembles an actual animal too much- no matter how well its been drawn.

For a more in depth comparison, check out TheTrueBCDefinitions!

On the submission form, use the "browse" button to locate the entry on your PC hard-drive, then below that there is a little box for you to type in. This is the spot you put a brief speech about why your entry deserves a users vote. Just keep it short as any extra text beyond the permitted 8 lines will be cut off. (8 lines on the form box, not what you typed up in word etc...) And that could look very odd, lol

As for what the speech should be, I would be inclined to state in brief where my better image is located (lookup, petpage etc...) and politely ask for the viewers vote.

    After all, this:
Veaf is in this weeks BC, better quality image on her petpage, thanks for looking and please vote!

Speaks more to the potential voter than this:

Hi my name is Veaf, I am a draik and I am in BC ^^; I really like faellie's!

Once you've found the image and written your little speech, hit the submit button. You entry should be displayed on that page
(it may even look a little squished, but don't worry about that)
along with a warning that if you enter another entry for that pet the current will be scrapped.

Finally, if your picture is the right file size, right species and file type you are automatically entered into the competition starting on the Friday (4.15pm NST) following the day you entered.

    *Note*
Keep in mind, you can re-enter your pet into the following week but if it wins, it is automatically withdrawn from the competition.
Also note that if, for example, your Lupe wins gold in species and gets banned, but your Xweetok was entered for the following week, your Xweetok IS still entered since it did not goldban.

If the Beauty Contest Judge has a problem with your entry, she will send you a neomail notifying you and your entry is removed from the upcoming competition.
You cannot reply to the Judge since she has neomail blocked to Neofriends only.

Click and hold your left mouse button down on one of the images then drag your mouse to your browser address bar to veiw these screenies in full size in this section.
(if your using IE7 you just do the same except drag up to the tab section of your browser)

How to find out your image file size

The first method (left) is to go File/Open in MS Paint and hover your mouse over the files name.

The second method (right) is to open up programs like Corel Elements or Adobe Paintshop and go File/Open and click on your file, this brings up a small preview of your image and the file size.

MS Paint is the most commonly used art program and usually comes pre installed with any PC (not MAC's). Its disadvantage lies in its resizing ability. Below are the two main formats to save in, jpg and gif.

To save, select File/Save As and either choose via the bottom drop down menu, or in the top type .jpg or .gif after your file name. GIF is usually the one that will make your file size shrink the most BUT it does make your picture VERY blurry.

If you still have not reduced your file size enough, you will have to reduce your images pixel size. You can do this manually by going Edit/Select All and dragging the lower right corner to shrink the image.

Your last option with MS Paint if all other methods have failed is to make a "cropped" version like this:

Corel is another popular art program that can be bought (prices vary depending on the version you buy).

To reduce the image PIXEL size (Pixel size is the images visual size):

In the top menu bar- Image/Image Size
Here you can modify the pixel size to whatever you desire.

To reduce the image FILE size (File size is the images virtual size):

In the top menu bar- File/Save As/Select jpg in the drop down menu under the bit you type in your image's name
Here you can modify the file size to reduce it to the required 17kb.

This adjustment option automatically should popup when you click "OK" after choosing to save your image as jpg.

Adobe Photoshop is one of the best Art programs on the market, again prices do vary depending on the version you choose but pretty much all versions "saving" options are the same.

To reduce the image PIXEL size (Pixel size is the images visual size):

In the top menu bar- Image/Image Size
Here you can modify the pixel size to whatever you desire.

To reduce the image FILE size (File size is the images virtual size):

In the top menu bar- File/Save for Web
Here you can modify the file size to reduce it to the required 17kb as shown below.

The "Save for Web" option is better to use than the "Save As" in this program because it is designed for internet usage.

Sometimes even if you have a nice art program like Corel or photoshop its can still be difficult to meet the 17kb maximum for entering BC. So here is a method I use in such cases where my PSP7 won't quite reduce to 17kb on 0% quality.

I stumbled across this trick while trying to resize one of Veaf's BC entries. I didn't want to resort to a cropped version (I can be a little stubourn there :P) but this only will work if you have both Paint and either Corel/Adobe PSP/Something like them.

    1. Save image as .bmp in MS Paint, then close the file.

    2. Open image in Corel/Adobe PSP and save/reduce the image quality to 50% in .jpg form then close the file.

    3. Open in MS Paint and go File/Save, close the file.

    4. Open in Corel/Adobe PSP and again go to save it and further reduce the image quality.

    5. If the image file size is still a bit too big you then reduce the images pixel sixe by 50-100px.

This way your image won't be teenie tiny, but it will be very blurry (but thats to be expected).

This is a list of common errors you may encounter with possible solutions to each. If you are still having trouble, ask on either Beauty Contests or Help Boards for more solutions.

If neither can help, Email Amanda (The Neopets Team BC Judge)

This one is the most common, it can be very broad in its meaning.
Some of the most common reasons are:

  • The image is "too anthro" or "too realistic"
  • You image was saved in an incompatible file type.
  • A copyright sign/signature present on the image.
  • Your image has something that is copyrighted elsewhere
  • Your image is a Cosplay

The image is "too realistic" eg. Your Kougra is drawn too much like a Tiger.
I would advise you edit the picture to look more Neopet-like rather than Animal-like

The image is "too anthro" eg. Your Pet is drawn too much like a human with human body structure with ears and a tail attached.
You will need edit the picture to look have more Neopet-like body/facial structure rather than human-like features.

The image is not in either jpg (can be mistaken for jpeg or uppercase JPG) or gif
Usually I find "gif" gets this one the most, so if gif fails, try jpg (and vice versa)
Make sure neither is in uppercase (JPG or GIF) when you save.
Make sure its "jpg and not "jpeg" when saving as a jpg

You cannot put a copyright (c) image or signature on your image seeing as this involves a lot of legal issue The Neopets Team really doesn't want to get involved in
    (poor Lawyerbot)
Simply using the paint "text typer" to type in your user/real name is fine and has almost the same effect.

You are not allowed to enter a pet as a Cosplay as in your neopet dressed up like Harry Potter because there are many copyright issues and poor Lawyerbot will asplode.

One final solution would be to change the file name of your image. Sometimes its just a matter or the picture is uploading fine on your end and the judge is only seeing a white image.

  • This one is fairly easy, it just means the file size of your image is too high.
You can go HERE to look at some resizing options.

After you have resized, place a better full size image on your petpage or look-up.
Don't forget to make note in your entry speech as to where this larger image is!

Again, this is easy to bypass.
Every so often the BC "fills up" but once the BC judge views them and rejects the inappropriate ones it will reopen.
This is usually after the weekend, mid week and just before the new BC is due to start.
I usually check back after an hour, but if it's after The Neopets Team's working hours then the next day NST it should be fine to enter.

A fairly simple process, you can either locate an entry manually in a given category, click on the thumbnail then click the large button under the larger image that stated "Vote for petnamehere".
Or you can copy/paste the direct link from a user NeoSignature and click the button to vote for that entry.

The direct link for any pet (whether in or not) to go to their BC image is:

    http://www.neopets.com/beauty/details.phtml?pet=petnamehere

Every user is given the right to vote for one entry per species. Once a vote is cast it cannot be withdrawn.
But if an entry you voted for is disqualified and removed, you regain that species vote.

The primary way to gain votes is to create your own "vote" boards on the Beauty Contest Board. This is the ONLY board you are permitted to advertise in this manner.
But the trick to this board is to advertise that your voting, as well as seeking votes.
DO NOT mistake this with vote trading (which is a BC do not).
As long as you do not pressure users to vote for you just because you voted for them this is perfectly fine and you will see a lot of silent voters use this technique.

The key to BC is to get votes from users who would not ordinarily vote. This must be achieved in a fair and unimposing manner in accordance to the BC rules.
A very good way to do this is to place your pets BC picture link into your neosignature like this:

This creates easy access and free advertising without actually asking. It is also handy for use other Neoboards, although you are not permitted to create a full fledged "vote for my pet" thread, just by posting on other users threads your getting that link discreetly out there.
Its also a good idea to put a nicer, crisper version of your entry onto both your look-up and the petpage of the pet that is entered.
In a lot of cases, the 17k limit can make an entry look fuzzy or blurry, allowing users to see the full size version will work in your favour.

In addition, you are permitted to vote for your own entry ONLY on your main account.

90% of BC is honestly who you end up against, BC IS a popularity based system.
It also depends on who votes, how many vote, the amount of advertising of your pet you do, and many other factors.

A Silent voter will not tell you if they voted for your pet's entry, nor is it polite to request they do tell you.
It is good BC etiquette to respect a user's choice to remain a silent voter.

Other users are Non-silent, which generally means they tell you they voted (however incidences have been seen that users will "claim" they voted for a particular pet, but then tell the same to other pets in the same species to increase the chances of getting a vote in return)
Some believe that by counting your non-silent votes, it can give you an idea of how well your doing, but it has not been proven to work since the number of silent voters is increasing.

This generally means a user goes through every picture in a species before choosing the one they like best.
These users used to be able to create a board and post which entries they voted for and why but The Neopets Team has recently expressed that this is to be discouraged since it is essentially creating a "vote list" that could influence who other users vote for.
In essence, they were aiding in the advertising of pet entries which is a direct violation of the BC rules.

Some users find it wrong to post on your competitions threads unless you actually know the user.
I do understand that most of the time this is meant in good spirit when for example, a uni BC user post on a competing uni BCers board wishing them "good luck".
This by all means is great and appreciated but it can be taken the wrong way.
The point of making your own thread is to get people to look at your entry. Now think back to that situation, after that Uni BC posted their good luck another user comes into the thread and sees 2 entries posted, they will naturally look at both and vote for the better of the two.

I am in no way saying don't post on your competitions boards because it's wrong. I am merely showing it in both views.
While some appreciate it, others may not feel that way. Just be wary.

This however, was completely out of line in my books at least.

Very rude indeed and defiantly not appreciated.

This generally means a user goes through and neomails users randomly with a short speech about their pet and why it deserves your vote
It also normally contains a direct link to caste vote.
While some users do not mind, others find this style of vote seeking highly annoying junk mail and rude.
I normally recommend against this style of advertising.

    The Read-my-first-post-and-type-whatever-stupid-word-I-tell-you-to-or-I-will-spork-you-and-call-you-a-n00b rule.

Have you ever posted on a board on BC and been told that because you didn't follow the first post instructions, your entry would not be considered? Or been accused of Adverspamming?

This is an old technique of sorts that is used by old time BCers to sift out users who are there to interact from those who post and leave aka adverspam.

    What is Adverspam?
Generally its where a user has a set speech like this:

Hi Look at my pretty Usul!! It took me ages to do.
I would like your vote, ok thanks, bye!

They usually have it on copy/paste and they proceed to paste it on every active thread on the BC Board (sometimes on the same thread more than once....yes, its happened to me before o.o)

On BC, you'll find many users will say Blah blah blah post *star* if you read this blah blah oh and if you got this far type "meepit". They do this for 2 reasons.

1- It does let the board creator know if a poster is just slapping their entry down and leaving without looking at the board creators. And thus Adverspamming
2- It draws users to look at their entry, as most will put in "Make a comment on my entry or I won't look at yours"

Yes, it seems like a silly game, but it will save yourself a lot of grief in the end.
Always read the first post, do not skim!

Are you a regular on any board in particular? Say Help, Avatar or Battledome Chat?

Be sure to put your BC link into your NeoSignature or NeoHTML. Although you are strictly not allowed to make vote threads, you can get around it by doing your normal chatting.

By posting on threads in the board your mostly found in on a normal Neoday, you can discreetly get your entry noticed by users who recognize you and friends whom you've not seen in quite some time.

After all, BC is popularity based. And by doing this you are taking advantage of a fresh vote audience that would not normally vote.

    But Beware

You can go too far with this method, I highly recommend you do not use this method. It's mostly seen on the Help Board.

A user will make a board asking for something (mostly help), the BCer will come along and post the reply "I don't know" or "Free bump".

Now neither of these are very helpful to the poor board maker, and its a very sly way to get a few votes. Many BCers look down on this form of advertising.

Ok...this ones really only for the premium users in BC.
I personally, as have many other Premium members entering the BC, have created BC boards on both Main Hall and Charter Chat in the premium only boards.
The boards we make are exactly like those we would create on the BC Board itself.

I and a few of my friends have been told that it wasn't the place to make those boards, and that it was spam.
That the BC threads should be compacted into the one thread.

I was under the impression both boards were general chat boards.

I have also never seen or heard of a Premium BCers board either being locked or deleted.
Its not as if any browsers can't see our boards intentions as most put "Vote for THISPETNAME" or "BC" in the board title, thus can easily be skipped over if your in no mood to vote.

    And...Amanda agrees this.

If you have Charter access you might see that often there is a BC thread available for you to post on each week. The is a fresh one started every Friday so it wouldn't hurt to also post on this board as well as make your own one there :)

Excited yet? Its Friday 3.15pm NST and the competition officially closes and the results are tallied.
But where do you see how your pet did?

It's pretty easy, on the BC home page it will have a link to "last weeks results".

What your looking at initially is the overall placings, so don't be disheartened if you don't see your pet among the top 10.
You have yet to look up how your pet did in its species category.

Just because you didn't place overall doesn't mean you didn't do well!

If you look above the place list you will see a drop down menu, it lists all the species.
Find your pets species in that list and click the "submit" button next to it.
This will take you to your species placing list, and it shows which pets did the best in that category that week.

My finest placing to date, Ebon taking 1st Overall & in Species.

Feel proud of yourself regardless on how well you placed.
Some species are VERY difficult to place in due to a large number of pets being entered or being a popular species to draw.
Just because you "only placed 5th in Lupe" shouldn't be seen as a loss, placing 5th in Lupe is quite an achievement.
If you look at your placing relative to the amount of entries you can get a feel for just how great a placing that is!

Besides, if your having fun, your already a winner!

NOTE THAT AS OF APRIL 4TH NP & ITEM PRIZES WILL NO LONGER BE AWARDED DUE TO SIDE PETS BEING ALLOWED TO ENTER!

Finally, prizes, your week of advertising has been successful.
    But how is it decided?

    There are two prize catagories:

  • In species
  • Overall

When two pets tie in votes, the system randomly decide who's the winner.
So if 3rd and 4th tied, it's random who gets third (and gets the trophy/np awards).

In a competition there are 54 different species, each having a placing of gold, silver and bronze.
If you successfully fall into the top 3 in your pets species you are awarded a np prize:

  • Gold- 20,000np
  • Silver- 10,000np
  • Bronze- 5,000np

You are not notified if you win. Your np prize is automatically credited to your account.

Placing overall is similar, though the prizes are potentially better.
Pets that normally place overall, also place first in species so if your lucky enough to place in the top 3 positions of all the species combined, all three are goldbanned.
Prizes for placing overall are as follows:

  • Gold- 50,000np plus a random "rarity 95+" item.
  • Silver- 25,000np plus a random "rarity 95+" item.
  • Bronze- 10,000np plus a random "rarity 95+" item.

So if you were to place both First overall and in species, you would be getting a neat prize of 30,000np and a rare item.

A note on the rare items though, just because an item has a certain rarity doesn't always mean its worth lots.
Your prize may only end up worth 10,000np, or it could potentially be worth millions of np's. It is completely random.

However, that is not the best prize given out for winning.
You pet is awarded a spiffy new trophy that will be displayed on their look-up.

On the 6th of March, 2000 The Neopets Team announced the best news of all to every pet starring in the Beauty Contest! TROPHIES!

Depending on their placing, if your pet places both in species AND overall, you will be awarded TWO trophies!
One reflecting their species rank (normally gold) and the second reflecting their overall placing.
    Pretty sweet isn't it!

However, winning is a double edged sword if your a gold trophy winner.
If your pet wins a gold trophy in either species OR overall, they are automatically banned from entering for 4 months!
    This is the notorious "Goldban".
ONLY gold trophy winners get banned, if you win silver/bronze in species AND silver/bronze in overall, you are not banned!

General rules can be viewed here

    A word of warning though.
The Neopets Team take this contest EXTREMELY seriously.

To break a rule, whether by accident or to cheat is asking for a swift icing.

Personally, I have witnessed users have their Accounts frozen for various reasons, some didn't know, others did so to cheat.
Once it took 30 seconds after the Contest commencing.

But it is crucial to know, in most cases, "I didn't know" doesn't cut it with The Neopets Team.
Very few accounts manage to be reactivated once frozen for cheating in BC.

Though most BC rules are listed under the FAQ's, some are not.

This is most likely because The Neopets Team assumes users will use common sense, however, if you're not careful you can get caught up without realising.

The title states it. To steal Art is not only cheating on a game site, it is also breaking International Copywrite Laws.

This particular rule is clearly stated in the FAQ's and on the submission form page.
You may ONLY submit your own art into a BC competition.

You CAN NOT enter some one else's Art, even if you have permission.

To learn more about Stolen Art, I highly recommend this page:
    What is Stolen Art?

If you steal art or enter others art even with permission and get caught, you WILL be frozen.

You are NOT permitted to vote for your own entry on your sides.
Just as any "daily" it unbalances the competition and makes it unfair for those who don't have side accounts.

I know some out there will say "But I do that all the time and nothing happens
I say in reply, Is it worth the risk?
If caught, your account WILL be frozen.

Reminder: Goldbanning means to have all your pets banned from competing for 4 months after either placing in a competition overall or in species.

The goldban is in place for a very good reason, to prevent competition domination.
Essentially, it stops the users that "always win" from competing over and over and stopping others the chance for the top prizes.

    *screenie* thanks to anjie

If you attempt to "switch" a pet out to a side and take a side pet to your main for the sole purpose to re-enter BC, you are breaking the rules!
You would be "avoiding" the goldban.

This email was in reply to a user who unknowingly "rotated" their pets to continue entering BC.
Amanda- The BC judge, is VERY clear here in regards to this rule.
If you choose to do this, you WILL be frozen.

    *Screenie* thanks to sl0p.

So if you want to switch out a pet to BC another, wait until the pet you want to move off your main is unbanned.

Up until recently, it was possible to get off a goldban by changing a pets species, either with a potion or via lab.
Thus indicating that Goldban was linked to Species rather than petname.
Until Amanda fixes this she has made it very clear here:

    *Screenie* thanks to repulsives

In other words, if you potion morph to get off a goldban to re-enter and The Neopets Team suspects this, you probebly will be frozen or at least warned.
However, lab changes are fine since they are random.

    UPDATE! *IMPORTANT*

The rules have changed, goldban now applies to your pet in any species! So you could goldban in Techo then morph to a Tonu and still be banned!

You are NOT permitted to advertise for others in any way.
    This includes:
  • Advertising for others on the NeoBoards
  • Advertising by Neomailing someones entry to others
  • Advertising other users BC entries on your Petpage, Pet look-up, Look-up, Shop, Gallery or Guild.
  • Advertising for others by putting their direct vote link in your NeoSignature.

You also are NOT allowed to ask another user to advertise for you.

Advertising WITH permission will result in both the BCer and the advertisers accounts being frozen.
Advertising WITHOUT permission will result in the advertiser's account being frozen.

The following email is confirmation on this directly from Amanda.
Just be wary, distinguishing between with and without permission can be hard to judge so sometimes both accounts are frozen regardless.
You can, however, plead your innocent to The Neopets Team and *may* get your account unfrozen.

  • Advertising outside of the designated board for the Contest is defiantly against the rules.
When I say advertising, I mean directly creating a "Vote for my pet" thread on a board other than the Beauty Contest Board.

I am unsure of how exactly The Neopets Team handles this rule breaking but I do know the Board Monitors will lock a topic, as seen here.

I am unsure as to whether your account will be suspended or frozen.
But I do know that a lot of users actively seek out another pet in the advertiser's category to vote for rather than vote for the board creator.

Whether it is trading votes for votes or trading votes for items, this is a firm no in The Neopets Team's rule book.
The Neopets Team have commented numerous times in the Neopian Times in regards to this topic. The following was taken from the NT editorial section:

If you are caught trading for votes, you WILL be frozen.

I have also noticed an increase in users making "help" boards or "lending" boards to cover up the fact that its for vote seeking.
The large majority of the users that do this are those who would not normally make such boards.
It is usually up to the monitors to decide whether to lock the board topic or not, but a little something on the side I personally have noticed on the "lending" ones.
Its all good and all to loan an avatar item free to users, but to do so merely to get votes…is it really worth the risk?
8/10 cases where users do this, they ultimately have the item stolen from them.

This first thing you must understand, Harassment is not tolerated under ANY circumstances!
Everyone has the right to enter BC, no matter their skill level, and everyone should follow standard neo-etiquette

If you feel like you are being harassed, report it immediately!
Use either the report form under the abuse type "Harassment" or "Art Theft in the BC" (this one goes directly to Amanda)
    or Email Amanda

In general, users tend to get bothered in two area's of BC, during the advertising, and after the results get posted.

This comes in many different forms, a few screenied examples are below:

This user simply posted on a BCers board and declared they had voted for their competition, and basically told them their art didn't deserve to win.
I repete here, EVERYONE has the right to enter, and BC was designed to be a popularity based system.

And their reply when asked nicely to leave....

This is just a small taste of the abuse some users get in a BC week, but it is all not called for and highly reportable.

I recomend if they keep it up after being asked once (nicely) to stop, report them immediately.

    This generally happens EVERY contest.
Some users don't get the result they hoped for and sit in the BC boards and gripe over it.

Its when this griping becomes harassment that it gets serious.
If you get neomailed about "how your entry didn't deserve to win" or "Your pic is dung" etc...Block the user and if you feel the need, report them.

You do not have to deal with this kind of harassment, you DESERVED your win!

I am sad to say, some users have taken post BC harassment to a new level of late...
There have been incidents of overall winners with as these bullies have labeled "bad art", have been "dunged
(inventory spammed with the item "pile of dung")

If you fall victim to this, block items, block the users, report and sell off the free items -cackles-

Any Questions? Feel free to Neomail Me anytime, I promise to reply asap!

  • Anthro: Arthropod or "human like" generally drawn standing on 2 hind legs.
  • Quad: Quadropod or "Animal-like" generally drawn on all four legs (this varies species to species).

  • CAP: Copy and Paste entry. Below is an example of a "CAP", this generally means a user took the original image of the pet in question and modified it.

A Trace generally means a users drew their pet image in an identical pose and colouring that the Neopets itself was drawn by The Neopets Team.

Placing means to win a Gold, Silver or Bronze position in either Species or Overall. It is what every BCer strives to do.

She is a Neopets Team staff member that manages the Beauty Contest.
She is very sweet and is very helpful and understanding and always replies to her Emails.

Her Neo staff account is contest_judge, this is the account she will mail you any messages in regards to the BC, but take note that you cannot Neomail this account.

It will not be withdrawn, if you want to abandon your pet at any point after entering or during BC, you must Email Amanda to get your pet withdrawn.

Lets say you entered your pretty poogle with a darling image of it.
But then you decided to (or accidently) zap it, but it changes to a Grarrl. First your picture will automatically be shifted from the poogle catagory to the Grarrl one, but now your pic is in the wrong catagory.
Many BCers (and Amanda) monitor the entrants and if they notice a pic in the wrong catagory, they will report it and Amanda will remove it and send you a disqualifacation Neomail.

If you don't want to be disqualified, hold off the zapping until your pets BC week ends.

You will find it rightfully on your pets lookup, seeing as it is the pet that won the award.

If you pound your BC winning pet, the trophy goes with them, it will never disappear or jump onto your own lookup.

You can, seeing as they are your Neofriends and not random strangers.

    Firstly, don't panic.
This does happen from time to time despite all the monitoring, sometimes one or two get through.

I myself have delt with this.
Simply mail all the links: Original artwork (the one by you), the winners page, the pet's lookup and the thieves lookup.
Give Amana as much evidence and information as you can.

It will be taken care of as quickly as possible.

    You are indeed ^^
As long as the artwork is 100% yours, you can enter it into any suitable creative contest you wish!

You can, but some BCers would say not to do this, because it doesn't tend to get as many votes as the first time.
But there is no rule stating you can't.

I did, almost a year ago now. The Neopets Team sent me a lovely Neomail stating my page was possibly going to be a winner. But alas it was not meant to be, I have reentered a couple of times since but to no avail.

This page it seems is just not quite up to spotlight standards, but it doesn't bother me anymore. The lovely mail I get from users that have found this page useful make up for it :)

    -sad- Maybe someday...

I stumbled across this fantastic definitions page, it covers a lot of the common terms you will hear on the BC board that I don't cover here.

I hope you found this guide informative and I wish you all the best as you dive into the world of the Beauty Contest.
Believe me, it is extremely fun and I guarantee you'll be making new friends while you whittle away the hours of advertising.

I mainly made this guide due to the increasing number of users unknowingly getting caught up in rules that are not normally covered by the BC FAQ's.

If you have any trouble or are unsure about something, email the BC judge- Amanda.

If by any chance, you spot an error, or think I need to go into more detail or missed something on a topic covered here, By all means Neomail Me, just make sure to include the source or explain why you are having trouble.

I also express my thanks to Anjie, repulsives, wolftail and sl0p for their assistance in gathering information and aiding in the screenies.

If you would like to link back to this page feel free to take one of my banners.

But please note, you do not have permission to directly copy any of my work, I have worked very hard on this guide.
