History of the Empire
New Maraqua was a quiet, peaceful place before it was discovered. There were no tourists, no pirates, no
wars, and the three Mundo brothers, Muntando, Marvolo, and Olivio loved how it was hidden from the rest of the world. But it was not long before New Maraqua was discovered, and the peace was destroyed when the pirates invaded. The three Mundos decided it was time to find a better place to live, and they set off with a group of other underwater creatures to find a new home.

The journey was not an easy one, as they travelled across some of the remotest and most dangerous parts of the sea. They saw creatures they never knew existed, and sea monsters so terrible that at times it felt as if they had fallen into a watery nightmare they would never escape. They met other underwater creatures along the way, some trapped in their homes to keep away from the predators that swam all around, and the Mundos' prospect of a safe new home convinced them to join the group.

On the 20th of the month of Swimming, Year 6, the ninth day of their journey, they found exactly what they had
been looking for- the perfect place for them to live in quiet peace. But as the sea creatures began building a new city,
a band of vicious Nuranna sharks attacked. The Mundo brothers tried defending themselves as best they could,
but they were outnumbered. Muntando was bitten and killed, Olivio was dragged off in the jaws of one of the
beasts, and a third of the Mundos' followers had been killed or wounded. The Nurannas finally swam away, and Marvolo, the last Mundo brother left alive, was all alone, left wondering if their decision to find a more peaceful home was the right one.

Today, Marvolo is the emperor of The Underwater Empire, ruling the waters and keeping the peace. The Empire is divided into three regions, and a representative from each, along with the emporer, makes up the Emperial Council, which creates and enforces the laws. Each year, on the day that the Empire was created, the 20th of the month of Swimming, every sea creature in the Empire gathers to celebrate the birth of their Empire with enormous parties and parades. But when the sun goes down, and the waters darken as night takes over, everyone mourns the loss of Muntando and Olivio, because without them, there would be no Empire. No fish forgets the loss that it took to bring peace to each of their lives.

The Shark Policy
The history of the Shark Policy dates back to the very beginning of the Empire. Everyone knows the story of the three Mundos who founded their Empire, and how two
were killed by Nuranna sharks. The one surviving Mundo, Marvolo, went on to create the Empire and become the
first emporer. After mourning the loss of his brothers, Marvolo created the policy forbidding all sharks.

The Shark Policy has stirred up much debate within the Empire ever since it was created. Some argue that most Neopian sharks are friendly, while others (especially fish) say that they aren't willing to take the risk. Marvolo has
said that since it is in a shark's nature to eat other sea creatures, sharks will always be forbidden as long as he is still the emporer.

Fish of the Month
Every sea creature has a unique personality and history,
yet very few people seem to notice. The Underwater Empire is a whole community of these creatures - how could we NOT notice? Every month, the Fish of the Month chooses one sea creature and tells something about them. It could be the story of how Bob the Breadfish was born, or it could tell about George the Giant Brown Kelp's first date! Make sure you check back at least once a month to see which fish is featured!
