Since the tragic death of her son, Serenalii has learned to be potent and brave. Her confidence is ominous and awe-inspiring. She has the capability to make a grown man cry in fear although it is unlikely that she would use this skill for such things unless if necessary.
The walls of secrecy that Serenalii builds around herself camouflages her personal life. She is so driven upon keeping her history a secret that she often comes across as a very depthless, uncaring person. But inside, Serenalii cares for some people more than they will ever know.
But before the birth of the baby, Prince Raphial died in the tragic war dividing the land. Serenalii was left to look after the child on her own.
In search of comfort, she grew very attached the baby inside of her. When Serenalii gave birth, she began to feel happy again and enjoyed nurturing her new son who she named Kuja. For three years, she lived in the castle of Kutio.
But because she was no longer married to a living man, it wasn't long before another prince came along in search of her hand in marriage. Prince Derrik was the crown prince of Galaka. He was a very shallow person, choosing Serenalii as his wife simply because she was the youngest princess "on the market".
Serenalii had no choice. She and Kuja left Kutio to live in Galaka, where they spent the first few weeks getting used to living in another castle.
The King planned a ball one week before the wedding to celebrate Derrik and Serenalii's engagement. That night, Serenalii was on her way downstairs to the main hall when she found that she'd forgotten her purse. She climbed back up the stairs and walked along the empty hallways that echoed her footsteps until she reached the door of her room. Kuja had been left with a maid, sleeping in his miniature bed.
Before Serenalii turned the handle, she heard voices coming from inside. The voices weren't those of Kuja nor the maid. She hesitated and listened closer but couldn't make out what the voices were saying. Suddenly, they stopped talking. Serenalii's first thought was that they must have heard her outside, so she opened the door slowly to alert them of her presence. Her first glimpse of the room inside startled her: five soldiers were gathered around Kuja's bed, leaning over in concentration.
Serenalii burst into the room, asking what they were doing in an accusing tone. The soldiers all turned to look at her, and Serenalii noticed that one of them was Prince Derrik. She demanded what they were doing once more.
Prince Derrik tried to put on his charm but Serenalii wouldn't listen. He told her that they simply found Kuja in his bed, breathing heavily, and they were worried. When Serenalii asked where the maid was, nobody could think of a legitimate answer. She knelt beside her son's bed and felt Kuja's forehead. It was ice cold.
."We couldn't do anything." Prince Derrik said, trying to sound upset, "But think of it this way: at least now, the new crown pince of Galaka will be our son - not Prince Raphial's son."
It was then that Serenalii realised that it was Derrik who killed Kuja. Derrik, the shallow, selfish little prince who had never really liked Kuja even though he was going to be his son. Serenalii snatched Kuja's limp body from his bed in an instant and ran to the door as she accused Prince Derrik of this offense.
Somehow, Serenalii found her way out of the castle. The prince and his secret soldiers followed her for a long time but when they hit the forest they gave up. Serenalii had escaped Galaka.
She spent the night holding her son's dead body and crying. In the morning she dug his grave with her own hands and placed him inside. Before she buried him, she took the necklace he wore around his neck and placed it around her own. During her pregnancy, Serenalii had made that necklace for him. She wanted to keep it as something to remember him by.
As afternoon crept upon her, Serenalii lay next to Kuja's grave - she was exhausted. But before she could fall asleep, a sound from a concealed creature alarmed her. As she sat up a jaguar emerged from the bushes and stopped to stare at her. Serenalii grabbed the closest stick and held it up threateningly.
But the jaguar didn't attack. Instead, it spoke. The jaguar told Serenalii that he had been watching her for a very long time, and his heart went out to her for her loss. He explained that he, too, knows what it's like to loose someone you love.
Serenalii asked what he wanted with her and the jaguar laughed. He didn't want anything from her; he simply wanted to comfort her. The jaguar then introduced himself as Tingrai and told her of a village where she could hide out.
The Kougress agreed to travel with Tingrai to this village. It felt like she was ripping her own heart out by leaving Kuja behind, but she comforted herself in knowing that his spirit was with her. By the time they found the village, Tingrai and Serenalii became good friends.
On her first day of exploration, a young lady approached Serenalii and asked where she got Kuja's necklace. Flattered, Serenalii explained that she made the necklace herself. The woman offered money to Serenalii as she asked if she would make a necklace for her, too.
Over time, Serenalii became a well known jewelry maker. She made her jewelry out of natural resources; it was her pure talent that people were paying for. Tingrai accompanied Serenalii on her trips to the forest where she gathered various objects to make more jewelry with. Soon, she was able to buy a small hut for herself and Tingrai to live in.
She'd begun her new life as a peaceful jewelry maker, never to speak of her horrifying past ever again. From time to time, Serenalii would make a day trip deep into the forest where Kuja's grave lay. She would sing him lullabies. Then she would cry. But no one else except for Tingrai knew that she did this. And no one else ever would.
