RoaneAmhran
(rown-aw-rawn)
Guardian of the Selkies

Human form she had, in Crescent City
She showed me her pity, lucky me.
In a storm so bad, the worst of the autumn
She came from the bottom of the sea.

~ Selkie Bride (Honeycomb)

The sunlight glints off of the brownish bronze scales of the dragon before you. Her eyes are dark and soul-full. The scent of salt and the sea eminates from her mingling with the spray from the crashing waves not far from the scene.
With a melodious soft irish accent, the dragon adresses you.

I'm guessing that if you came this far to meet me, that you are looking to hear my story. It 'tis an odd one, I must admit. I do so love to chat and regal visitors with music or stories, so today I shall tell my tale... if you have the time.

Coats & Selkies

For as long as I can remember I had been a selkie.

Selkie legend originaly came from the celtic lands, and they are closely related to mermaids. They are seals, male and female, who can shed thier skins like coats. Underneath they are human and like to roam the coastline in this form.

The selkies are gifted with heart-meltingly beautiful voices, and kind natures. Often humans would try to capture a selkie's hidden skin to force them to become thier spouses. Although gifted with a loving nature, it is a fate worse then death for a selkie, as they will forever feel drawn to the sea.

Little did I know, or even remember... that this was not who I truly was.

The Attack!

Where my selkie colony lived, we were typicaly safe from danger. Wards had been cast to keep ships from coming too near, and our undersea allies kept the more dangerous ocean predators from our home.
But my colony was filled with terror and confusion the day that a large, fetid smelling dragon ravaged our home.

It was a black dragon. Wicked and evil (and I must add, more then a little thick headed) they are rarely seen outside of swamplands... and practically never this far out to sea.

When surprised me even more was when the selkie Queen called for me. Sitting upon her throne of coral and pearl, she requested that 'I' be the one to face the dragon, and force him away from the selkie colony.
I thought she was addled in the brain.

In the background the rumble of rocks, and the cries of my fellow selkies could be heard as the Queen demanded my to hand over my seal skin.

True Form Re-gained

With the Queen's command the selkie knights pulled my selkie skin from around my human waist and presented it to her. She waved her webbed fingers, ancient words of power spilled from her lips.

Suddenly I felt queasy, falling to my hands I realised that they were massive dragon claws, and the room grew smaller as my form enlarged. Even more disorienting was the flooding of over 50 years of memories rushing through my brain, re-working themselves.

I was rather large, about 5' tall at the shoulder, and nearly 25' long. But even larger was the black dragon, which I realised as my advisary finally reached the throne-room. Ripping the coral walls to rubble as the black dragon forced it's way inside, I instinctively dis-gorged a powerful blast of lighting from my gullet.

He realy didn't expect that.

In surprise the black backed out of the building, and I took to the wing to follow up into the air. A spray of acid splashed from his mouth, burning my shoulder.
In the waves of below the magical voices of the selkies rose in spell and power. Bit by bit the black was pelted back by thier magical might. It was only then I noticed how he had already been wounded even before I joined the fray.
But I turned the tide of the battle.
Not willing to face such odds, even with his greater power, the black fled. The cheers of the colony filled the air, and I have never heard anything more melodious.

The Past Revealed

I landed once again in the ruins of the once great throne room. With only my will I changed my form back into the human woman whom I used to be beneath my selkie coat. The Queen had my seal skin handed back to me, and I once again wrapped it about my waist.

It was then that she began to clear up my now jumbled memories. For I was truly a bronze dragon, not a selkie. She had found me orphaned, alone and frightened while I was bearly juvinile, not even quite in my adolescence. My family had been destroyed by that same black dragon, and she had given me a powerful gift to hide me. A magical selkie skin.
It was an item of great arcane power, for the one who donned it would truly become a selkie... in both form, and memories. The Queen had given it to me as it would muddle any divinations to find the dragon I once was, as she would no longer exist.

Even my memories had been affected to make me truly think that I had always been whom I was. Even the oddest of things I would re-rationalize until it suited my selkie life.

The Queen had never expected the black dragon to find me, even after those many decades had slipped by.

The spell that was cast upon the skin was the most powerful magic known, a 'wish' spell that she had stored in a ring. From now on the memory-changing effect of the skin would be inert, and she asked me to please stay with the colony... as it's guardian and protector.

Life Today

So now I live amongst the selkies and other water faeries that I so adore. I have been aiding them in re-building thier home while my jumble of memories resets itself.

I have re-named myself, my former draconic name was Amhran, irish-gaelic for 'song'. But I have added Roane to the beginning of it, which is gaelic for 'Selkie'. It's to represent my very different life from the dragon I would have been.

I do feel guilty about the attack of the black dragon, as I am positive that he was searching for me. Although I am still befuddled as to why.

I've found my natural draconic powers returning instinctively. When I feel that the colony is safe once again I plan to chase the rumours that my true father still lives in a distant land where dragons and draiks dwell.

Perhaps I shall see if my companion Dynderlind can help me find the way there. I am rather sure that he has been to those lands a few times before.
Won't he be surprised to see me now.

About Roane

Roane is a bronze dragon from the D20 setting (very legal to use as they have an open license).
She is a water element dragon, and spends nearly all of her time either in the ocean or the shoreline. Her voice is sweet and melodious, and she spends much of her time singing hauntingly beautiful tunes.
For over 50 years she was under a powerful curse to truly believe that she was a selkie, even her earlier memories were warped and twisted by her own logic to make them fit into her new life-style. With the curse lifted, she now remembers everything as it properly was.

Roane has a heart of gold, and a kind nature.

    Song Lyrics

    Return to Innocence
    by Enigma

    Love - Devotion
    Feeling - Emotion

Don't be afraid to be weak
Don't be too proud to be strong
Just look into your heart my friend
That will be the return to yourself
    The return to innocence.

If you want, then start to laugh
If you must, then start to cry
    Be yourself don't hide
    Just believe in destiny.

    Don't care what people say
    Just follow your own way
Don't give up and use the chance
    To return to innocence.

That's not the beginning of the end
    That's the return to yourself
    The return to innocence.

    Pookabunny's Notes

First off, Roane is a re-make of a D&D chracter.
Due to the d20 system's 'open license' creating a 'bronze dragon' character is very legal, and not infringing on any copyrights. (As the 10 main dragon types in the monster manual 'are' open license content.)
But it does infringe on copyrights to take, copy a characters concept/history/exact design. (Roane has been slightly altered from the original bronze dragon's design... and her alterations to the design and character name/concept is 'product identity' and copyrighted to myself.)

For further information visit the Wizards of the Coast Website at Wizards.com

To be fair, I am including the magical selkie pelt that cursed Roane as 'open content'. (ie. allowed to be used by anyone.)

Pelt of the Selkie: This magical seal skin (which may be a normal skin, coat, belt, cloak, or anything else commonly made out of fur) is created by the fey race known as selkies to add a non-selkie to thier colonies.
When donned the item transforms the wearer completely into a 'selkie'. The wearer gains a selkie's extraordinary and supernatural abilities (both attacks and qualities), but looses thier own supernatural abilities. The wearer gains the strength, desterity and constitution scores of a selkie, but retains thier own Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma scores. Thier type changes to 'fey.
Upon changing into selkie for the first time, the wearer must make a will save DC 15 (†1/additonal day) or permentantly believe that they truly are, and have always been a selkie. (Even the character will try to logically find ways to explain very strange/non-selkie memories.) When the will save is failed The wearer's alignment changes to neutral good and the change into a selkie, and memory alterations is permenant. 'True seeing' and other forms of divintation will see the wearer as if they were, and have always been a true selkie. This new state is only removeable by a limited wish, wish or miracle spell.
Strong transmutation and enchantment; CL15 Craft Wonderous Item, Creator must be a Selkie. Price 10,000 gp
