[.Meadow's Pets.]

[.Introduction.]

You have just left a desert village and are struggling up a dune. The sun seems to be enjoying the pain its causing you by beating down on your back. You think maybe you never should have taken an adventure across the desert - you didn't know it would be this hot. You glance up to see how much farther you have to climb to reach the top, and see the silouhette of a lupe. You top the dune, and the lupe comes into view. He's reddish brown, and is wearing a peculiar gold and cream mask on his face. A gold band encircles his foreleg, signifying he is somewhat wealthy.

He smiles kindly at you. "It seems as if you have little experience in traversing the desert. Would you care to stop by my house and see if I have anything that could be of help?"

What, you mean like special shoes or something?" you ask, shaking sand out of yours as you do so.

He chuckles and shakes his head. "I mean information. I have a collection of writings, scrolls and such, that I can peruse for material that may help you."

His brainy way of speaking is taking a bit for you to get used to. "Er...okay," you say. It's not like you're on a schedule. He leads you down the dune and up another, taller one. On the other side of this dune, a baked clay hut comes into view, fit snugly against the side of the dune.

You both enter through a curtain and you find yourself in an airy little space. The wall to your right is taken up by a cot and a window above it. The left wall is filled with a large wooden table and chair, with a window above that as well. In front of you, you see some shelves, filled with paper and the odd quill or ink bottle. A trap door in the center of the floor apparently leads down to a basement of some sort. The lupe invites you to sit on a small chair against the same wall the door you just entered from is. Then he fetches a loaf of bread from a cabinet next to you and slices a few pieces for you. "I suppose I should introduce myself," he begins, smiling.

[.Personality.]

My name is Refoveo, but sometimes I am called Refo or, by people very close to me, Ref or Reffy. But I prefer you call me Refoveo, since we don't know each other well. I live here in this hut, which I built with my own paws. Tah (my mate) and I are planning on expanding it though, since our family is growing.

My main hobbies include reading and writing, since I am a scholar by trade. I spend most of my time writing documentaries, thoughts, and summaries on readings I come across, as well as searching for manuscripts to add to my library, which you will see later. I am pleased to say that my works are quite well-known, especially around the desert cities and villages, and to make money I sell them to libraries, other scholars, and sometimes rulers themselves (kings and elders and such).

Simply put, I like reading, writing, studying, collecting things for my library, and exploring the land and villages around me, constantly looking for new material. I also greatly enjoy spending time with the love of my life, Tahlainna, and our family. The desert is also a place of happiness for me, with its mysterious, unexplored areas and majestic sunsets.

I do have my dislikes, however. Those include cold and wet weather, crowds, and rodents that like to get into my cherished library and nibble away at the delicate papers. I don't like crowds because many times the majority of them stare at my mask, probably wondering how disfigured I am under it and how it happened.

I can tell you are curious about that as well. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to tell you.

[.History.]

My past is relatively uneventful. I was born to Sandbreeze and Keron, in a small desert village, one of many dotting the sands of the Lost Desert. My grew up in a happy home and developed my love for intellectual activities at an early age. Unfortunately, I strayed too far from the village when I was at a young age and encountered a rather aggressive Seti (for those of you who don't know, that is a type of desert petpet that looks somewhat like a deer). Since I was young and naive, I did not realize the danger until too late, and I could not defend myself. Most of the fight was a blur, and all I remember is tearfully running home, my face tattered and bleeding profusely. The skin never healed properly, so now I have to wear a mask to protect the delicate mutilated skin on my face, because the sand and possibly just the air can cause it to start bleeding again. I would show you but...it would probably scare you off...

[.Library.]

Now it is time to show you my rather extensive library," he says, and ushers you out of the way. Once you are against a wall, he leans down and pulls up a trap door in the floor that you hadn't noticed before. You follow him down a small flight of steps and into a large basement-like room. The floor is dusted profusely with fine sand, but you are surprised to find that the shelves that line all four walls are dust- and sand-free. A table smaller than the one upstairs decorates part of the back wall, and on it is a simple, carefully-shielded gas lamp that casts a dim yellow glow. "I have it all organized by subject among other things," Refoveo states, slightly proudly, as you gaze around the shelves packed with scrolls, papers, volumes, journals, and books. Upon further inspection you notice a box in a corner filled with stacks of parchment, bottles of ink, and extra quills for writing. "Impressive," you comment, and the lupe smiles. "I have to keep them underground or else the sand blowing in from outside and the harsh sunlight would damage them; some of these scrolls and books are over 1,000 years old! I am constantly searching far and wide to add to my collection."

He leads you back up the stairs and shuts the trapdoor firmly, inviting you to sit once again. "Now more about my family..."

[.Love.]

Tahlainna
I met Tah in a desert village while searching for some parchment to buy. She seemed a little flustered and overwhelmed, so I brought her to my house to rest some. Before either of us knew it, we were in love. She loves me even though I look less than perfect; she's even seen me with my mask off, which isn't a pretty sight. So far, we have a daughter, Sparksong, and there's hopefully more on the way.

[.Art.]

I have some drawings of me that I have come across in my travels, either by famed artists or merely kind people. I keep these on hand for any time I need something to perk me up.

[.Bye.]

I suppose you should go now; it's getting late and it's not safe to travel the desert by night," he says, leading you to the door, "But you can come back again any time, either to talk or if you want to read something interesting. My library isn't open to the public, but I'm sure I could let you briefly borrow something," he winks at you and you thank him for his hospitality. Then you hurry towards the nearby village, taking his warning to heart.
