Where are the adoptees?
You'd be surprised how often I get asked this. Go to

http://billopan.com/adopt/

to find the TNO orphanage of all adoptees. There are also plenty of adoptees in our Adoptee Ads forums at

http://billopan.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=50

Does it cost anything to adopt?
Yes and no. While we don't charge you a dime, the Neopets pound charges a small fee for adopting from them. So at the time of adopting, make sure you have some NP on hand. Since the fee varies depending on the pet's level, it could cost anywhere from under 100 NP to well over 1,000 NP. Find out exactly how much by copying and pasting this address in your browser's address bar, and adding the pet's name at the end:

http://www.neopets.com/process_adopt.phtml?pet_name=PETNAME

Note: It only works if you have less than 4 pets in your account. If you don't have enough, it will tell you how much you need. If it tells you that pet is already taken, you have enough. Keep at least that amount on hand when adopting because there won't be time to run to the bank. I recommend keeping more on hand because a ghost or the Tax Beast could show up right before adopting and steal some of your NP (yes, this has already happened to one of our members, resulting in a lost pet).

Who can adopt? What kind of owners are you looking for?
Unless the - Adopt me! - link on the adoptee listings turns red when you hover over it, anyone can adopt from us, but you have to take our Pledge of Good Ownership. If the link does turn red, click on the adoptee's name to see what the caretaker's requirements are to adopt. Remember that you might not be the only one asking to adopt that pet, so make your case noticeable, yet honest -- our foster owners are looking for someone who will take good care of their adoptees so that they never get abandoned or neglected again.

How do I adopt?
The whole process is quite unorthodoxed and there have already been regrettable and rude mishaps, but until and unless someone can come up with a better idea, this is the way it's going to have to stay. :T

Step 1: Click on - Adopt me! - under the adoptee's piccy in our listings, and tell the foster owner why they should pick you. (Don't forget to take our Pledge of Good Ownership.) Please do not neomail any other account, or you may be ignored.

Step 2: If you're chosen, agree on a time to "meet" on an instant messenger. Never rely on neomail alone unless absolutely necessary.

Step 3: At your meeting time, make sure you have enough NP on hand to adopt. The pound fees vary depending on the pet's level, so find out exactly what it will be here.

Step 4: Copy and paste this into your browser's address bar with the name of the pet you're about to adopt at the end -- spelled correctly:

http://www.neopets.com/process_adopt.phtml?pet_name=PETNAME

Step 5: When the foster owner tells you to, keep refreshing that page!

Tips: Adopt late at night (NST) -- not as many people are online__, plus your internet connection will probably be faster. Make sure you give your undivided attention (don't be chatting with someone else at the same time, etc.). Ask the foster owner to count down and say "GO" just before putting their adoptee in the pound, so you can synchronize the exact moment. Above all, be quick!

I requested a pet ages ago! Why haven't they responded?
There are a few possibilities:

a) The foster owner could be getting too many requests, and just ignore the ones they reject or that don't meet their requirements (though we strongly suggest to them to reply to all applications, even if it is to reject). Note: To help get your application noticed, submit it for evaluation to one of our Request Evaluators

http://billopan.com/adopt/evaluators.php

b) The username you're neomailing isn't the one that's linked to on the site. Make sure you only apply via the - Adopt me! - link -- that is the one submitted to us by the foster owner as their most active account, and may not be the same as their foster account.

c) The foster owner is no longer active either in TNO or Neopets or both. Check though, to make sure they're not currently on vacation.

We ask that you give it a week at minimum before jumping to conclusions -- we do have lives off of Neopets, and the foster owner may just be away for a short bit. :)

Someone else adopted my pet! How do I get him/her back?
Unfortunately, since most of the Neopets at the pound are unpainted, quite weak, and low on levels, our adoptees will be stand-outs for sure. Now, I know the whole point is finding an owner that will keep the Neopet, but it's just not cool for those owners who really had their heart set on a specific pet. That's why I stress meeting on an instant messenger instead of just neomailing for precise timing.

If you still end up missing the mark, we're sorry, but all we can do is neomail the new owner and kindly ask for the pet back. If they refuse, there's nothing anyone can do. Just be happy that the pet has found a permanent home, even if it's not with you. :) Also, do not attempt to buy back the pet. It's most likely a scam and that person should be reported.

Can I do a "trial" adoption?
Unfortunately, no. There are just too many dishonest people who are just dying to get their hands on any freebies they can. And since our adoptees may come "fully loaded," so to speak, there's a good chance of mug-and-drop, and the poor thing would have to go through abandonment all over again. This is a bit like "neo-sitting" (which is of course illegal).

Pledge of Good Ownership
Some owners require that you recite this pledge to them or have it somewhere in your shop or lookup. Others just want you to say it to yourself and mean it. Regardless, we strongly feel that you should take this pledge and live by your promise before adopting a pet from us. Also, we recommend that you read our Adoption FAQ before adopting. Without further ado, here is the pledge:

If I am chosen, I, (your name) , pledge to be the best owner I can be for my new Neopet, (pet's name) . I understand all the sadness that he/she has already been through, and so I will provide everything he/she needs to be happy. I promise to be a friend to my new Neopet and never ever ever put him/her through the pain of neglect or abandonment again.

What do people want in an application?
I've seen many applications saying, "I like your pet, will you let me have it?" There are many reasons why I wouldn't accept this application. First off, I have several pets for adoption. How do I know which pet you are talking about? Second, I would want to know what would happen if you were allowed to adopt this pet. I'm sure a lot of other people would also prefer and choose applications that explain what you will be doing. Here are some ideas or tips for what I thought will make people want to accept your application and what people think is good.

1. Introduce Yourself: Not everyone knows everyone in TNO, and if you're not in TNO, even more so. Explain who you are and what you do on Neopets. You don't ever need to tell your real name.

2. Have a decent message : Try to have your application legible to others. A few misspelled words are alright, but overall, try to have the application as well done as you can. Additionally there are some things that certain foster owners will expect you to do, such as say something special in the letter. You must have these done if you want your application to be considered.

3. The Pet Information: State the name of the pet you want. Make sure you also get the gender right. A lot of people apply asking for "it." Each Neopet has a gender, and unless they're in the Lab Ray, that gender should stay the same. It's also a good idea if you get the species right.

4. Explain what you'll do: If you got the chance to adopt the pet, what would you do to take care of it? Train it? Feed it? Play with it? Read to it? A big thing is that you must be honest.

5. Creativity: What may be the extra thing that puts you over the edge is creativity. Maybe you can write a poem about the pet. Or maybe you can roleplay. Or you can talk to the pet in the application. Using creativity really shows that you want to adopt THIS pet. And that can be important.

Thank you for reading this article and good luck on adopting your next pet.
