My Story

I wasn't always like this. I used to be a bori. I had a human friend named Sarah and I had tons of friends. It was a pretty decent life and I was content with it.

Then one day, it ended...but somehow, I came back. But not as I once was...

New life

Somehow, I was reborn...as a zangiper. And before you ask me what that is, it's a cross between the pokémon Zangoose and Seviper. I find it kind of strange, considering that both species are natural enemies.

Memories of battling its arch-rival Seviper are etched into every cell of a Zangoose's body. If it sees one, both of them will fight, sometimes to the death.

But for some reason, this wasn't the case with my parents- a female Zangoose and a male Seviper. Apparently, or so I've been told, my parents both took shelter in an abandoned cave during a storm. They where unable to see each other in the pitch darkness, but when they saw each other's faces, they didn't fight each other. Maybe they didn't have that instinct or something.

I was hatched (yes, from an egg) in my mother's den, somewhere in Sinnoh, I think. She didn't let anyone come and see me. My tail and fangs were a dead giveaway as to what my father was. She would be in serious trouble if anyone found out.

On some occassions, she'd sneak out at night to take me to see my father. I don't really remember much about him.

I didn't stay a secret from the other zangoose for long, though. One night, when my mother left the den for a short while, a male zangoose made the mistake of straying too close to where I was. My seviper instincts immediately kicked in and I attacked him using Poison Fang. He scratched me across the face (hence the scar on my muzzle), which caused me to loosen my grip on him. He ran off, stumbling around in the dark.

When the other zangoose saw the puncture wounds on his leg, they assumed it was a seviper that did it. So on the morning that followed, they went off to attack the seviper clan. My own father was killed during the brawl.

When my mother learned of what happened, she spent the rest of the day crying in her den. She was devastated that her one and only love was killed by her own kind. A passing zangoose noticed her and asked what was wrong. But then he noticed me and exclaimed "...Oh, my Arceus!!! He's part seviper! I have to tell someone!"

My mother immediately grabbed him by the leg and dragged him into our den.

The truth leaks out

My mother was holding him hostage in our den. She had me pinned to the ground so I wouldn't be able to attack. She had told him that if he tried to escape to tell someone about me, she'd kill him.

."Please, let me go." He pleaded. "I promise that I won't tell anyone about your boy. Just let me live!"

She eventually gave in and let him go free. But he must have lied about not telling anyone. Because soon afterwards, the clan elders showed up at the den to punish us.

My mother truly did love me. So she offered her life to save mine. And so it was done. They killed her right in front of me.

It was only seconds after that when my seviper instincts kicked in again. I attacked every zangoose that was unlucky enough to get into my range of vision. Some got away, but most of them were killed. But I didn't finish them off unscathed. One of them got me on the side of my head, which is how I got this scar going over my right eye.

When I finally calmed down, a feeling of guilt came over me. And it wasn't regret for killing those zangooses. Both of my parents were dead because of me. I began to wish that I had never been born at all.

The teacher

After that, I wandered around alone. Whenever I approached any other pokemon they would just look at me with disgust. My mother never taught me to hunt, so I didn't know how to get food. I would have starved, if I hadn't have met that luxray...

He called himself "Atom". When he first saw me, he planned on eating me at first. But when he saw how thin I was, he decided to let me go.

That was when I noticed a flock of pidgey. I was so hungry I tried to catch one, but they flew away when I rushed at them. Atom then snagged one with his paw and caught another in his jaws. When he realized that I didn't know how to hunt for myself, he felt bad and decided to raise me himself.

That was the first time I had ever eaten bird meat, which became my favorite food after that. As time passed, Atom taught me how to hunt larger game. He also taught me how to defend myself from larger foes, but I had already got the hang of attacking. He was impressed to see me take down a full grown Ursaring. He had a feeling that I would have great potential as a hunter.

The Fight

One night, while Atom and I were out hunting, we had our eyes set on a female Lucario. We had the advantage because the wind was blowing towards us, making it impossible for her to smell us.

I went to attack first. She never saw me coming. I had her pinned to the ground with a single use of my Crush Claw. I was about to finish her off, when I heard cries from the bushes.

."Mama! Don't hurt Mama!" It was a baby Riolu with a Soothe Bell dangling around his neck. It was at that moment when I realised that this Lucario was his mother. I didn't want the little guy to feel the pain I felt when I lost my mother, so I let her go.

."What was that for?!" Atom roared. "You had her right where we wanted her! Why did you release our prey?"

."She had a child hiding in the bushes. I know what it's like to lose your mother, and I didn't want that Riolu to experience the same thing."

."DO YOU KNOW WHAT HUNTING MEANS?" He roared back at me. "IT MEANS YOU DON'T SHOW MERCY TO YOUR PREY!" He then lunged at me with his Thunder Fang attack, but I quickly dodged him.

He roared in anger, then took another shot at me. When I realized that he was fighting me, I struck back with Close Combat. It was a powerful attack, but it also lowered my defense at the same time. As a result, he got me a couple times with his Fury Cutter, which is how I got these big scars on my right shoulder and my right flank.

Finally, I pinned him to the ground with my Crush Claw, then delivered the final blow with Poison Fang.

Atom let out a roar of pain, then he looked me in the eyes. "I'm proud of you..." He whispered with his dying breath. "I knew that someday a creature stronger than me would end my life...but I glad that the one who did it...was you."

And that was the end of my teacher's life.

When I realised what I had done, I ran away from the scene. Eventually, I stopped and screamed at the moonlit sky. "Forgive me, Atom!" I yelled. "I didn't mean to kill you! I was only trying to defend myself. But what I did caused your death! Forgive me!"

I shouted at the sky until I fell down and went to sleep.

Memories

There's one thing in my story that I forgot to mention. Ever since my new life began, I'd have dreams about my old life. But I didn't know I had an old life, because when my soul wound up in this body, I lost my memory.

In my dreams I was a golden-colored creature with brown ears, boney plates on my back, a blind right eye, and a green pawprint painted over my left eye. I also had a scar on my muzzle and over my right eye just like I do now.

In my dreams, I would often hang out with this one creatue. She looked a little bit like a Pachirisu, but larger and with longer fur. And she would always call me "Mazzew".

I couldn't make it out at first, but there was something about my dreams that seemed familiar.

When I woke up the next morning, I was greeted by a strange-looking creature. I had no clue what it was. It sure didn't look like any pokemon I had ever seen before.

."Greetings, Mazzew." He said with a slight echo in his voice. "I have been searching for you."

."Who in the heck are you?" I said as I rubbed my eyes. "And what do mean by 'searching for me'? I've never met you before."

."I am Inlé. I've been searching for you ever since you wound up in that body you're using."

I shook my head in confusion. "What?"

."You used to live in a place far away called Neopia. But when you died, it was my duty to escort your soul to Heaven. But somewhere along the way, I lost you and you wound up here in this body. I guess you could say that you got a new life."

The moment he mention 'Neopia', I instantly thought of those dreams I'd been having. "So I guess those dreams I'd been having...are memories?"

."Yes. Memories of your time spent in Neopia. You were best friends with a xweetok named Tosca."

."Tosca..." I instantly thought of that Pachirisu-like creature from my dreams. "What happened to her after I died?"

."She became upset when she heard that her dear friend never made it back home."

."Take me to her!" I demanded. "If all that stuff that you said is true, I want Tosca to know that I'm alive!"

."But...I don't think she'll recognise you."

."I don't care! Plus I have too many bad memories of my time here. I want to leave that all behind."

."Very well." Inlé then started glowing and a pair of enormous wings sprouted from his back.

And before I knew it, he whisked me away to Neopia. I wasn't said about leaving my home in Sinnoh. I was actually glad to leave it all behind. It held too many painfull memories.

Reunion

Inlé had brought me to my old home in Neopia. It was a vast field between Shenkuu and Altador that had been left untouched by man. It was very early in the morning, and the sun was about to rise.

As I walked through the long grass, I recognised the familiar surroundings. Then I remembered what had happened to me in my old life.

I was the oldest in a litter of four bori cubs and I was the only one who survived. My mother died when I was still very young and I was taken in by a family of Mazzew, one of which became my best friend. One day, we were seperated from our family and were captured by some humans who planned on selling us to a petpet store. My mazzew and I escaped and we wound up in a shadowy forest, where I was attacked by two bori who were larger and stronger than I was. They attacked me because they thought I was invading their territory.

I was almost killed by them, but I got away from them and passed out from my wounds shortly afterwards. I was then found by Tosca, who nursed me back to health. I soon became her most loyal friend, willing to protect her and her new clan from any danger.

...And it was my loyalty towards them that caused my untimely death. I had died while valiantly defending Tosca from a rogue eyrie.

Dictionary

After he finishes his tale, Mazzew tosses a book in front of you. "If there were some things in my tale that you didn't understand," He says. "you can look it up in here."

Zangoose: a Normal-type Pokemon that is well-known for its ongoing feud against Seviper. It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokemon.

Seviper: a Poison-type Pokemon that is well-known for its ongoing feud against Zangoose. It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokemon.

Arceus: a Normal-type legendary Pokemon. It is said to have emerged from an egg in a place where there was nothing, then shaped the world.

Luxray: n Electric-type Pokemon. It evolves from Luxio at level 30 and is the final form of Shinx.

Pidgey: a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokemon. It evolves into Pidgeotto at level 18 and then into Pidgeot at level 36.

Ursaring: a Normal-type Pokemon. It evolves from Teddiursa at level 30.

Lucario: a dual-type Fighting/Steel Pokemon. It evolves from Riolu via happiness during the day.

Riolu: a Fighting-type baby Pokemon. It evolves into Lucario via happiness during the day. (Sarah's uber favorite, too.)

Pachirisu: an Electric-type Pokemon. It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokemon. It's name is a combination of the japanese words "pachipachi" (electricity crackling), and "risu" (squirrel).

Poison Fang: a damage-dealing Poison-type move that will sometimes badly poison the target.

Crush Claw: a damage-dealing Normal-type move that will sometimes lower the target's Defense stat by one stat level. It is the signature move of Zangoose.

Thunder Fang: a damage-dealing Electric-type move that will sometimes paralyze the opponent. It may also cause the target to flinch, if the user attacks before the target.

Roar: a non-damaging Normal-type move that can scare away wild Pokemon.

Close Combat: a damage-dealing Fighting-type move that lowers the user's Defense stat and Special Defense stat by one stage each.

Fury Cutter: a damage-dealing Bug-type move that doubles in power each time it's used successfully.

Soothe Bell: a held item that calms the Pokemon holding it and makes it more friendly.

In my old life, I had a Mazzew named Tillie. She was as good of a friend as any petpet would be. Before I was killed, I left her with Sarah's friend. I haven't seen her since then.

I have since then found a new companion. A seti who prefers to be known as "Inlé" (In-lay). He's actually the one responsible for my new life. You see, Inlé's job was to escort the souls of the deceased to Heaven. But when he escorted me, I was lost somewhere along the way and as a result my soul wound up in a new body. After that, Inlé was relieved from his duty and now he spends his time wandering, just like I do.

Fact:
Inlé means "moonrise" in Lapine, a fictional language from Watership Down. It also means fear, darkness or death.
