Welcome to The Expanded Calendar (TEC)! This guide, run by Weapon, is a compilation of information on all annual Neopian events: when to expect them, what they're about and what there is for you to participate in. It also covers what happens on your birthday and the aging of your Neopets account.

TEC is an ever-improving project. If you know of any info that could be added, or have any other suggestions, then please do neomail me. Thanks!

News

14th May: The countdown to the Altador Cup has begun. Signs-up start in ten days. In the meantime you can read news about each team as two are added each day.

7th May: The Expanded Calendar is two years old today. [C:]

2nd May: The Faeries are offering daily quests! (Is this an annual thing? It's definitely happened before.) Main account only.

27th Apr: The Limited Edition Cybunny are being released for creation today! They're released in batches so you may have to wait to catch one if they're not currently available in Create A Pet.

In other news, TNT have stated that signups for Altador Cup VIII will begin on 24th May. Be sure to use up last year's prize shop points before then, as they will be forever lost after that date.

26th Apr: Thanks to Silvercomet23 and Amberkad for answering my query - I have updated the Special Issues with the information that there was no item given out to those whose work was included in this year's Grey Day issue of the Neopian Times. [:(]

20th Apr: Scores Galore is on in the Games Room! Send five scores instead of three, from today until the 28th.

4th Apr: Confirmed - the April Fool's Avatar can only be obtained today, the 4th. It now has its own entry on the calendar. [=D]

Also, I've added a link to TEC's News (here) to the navigation. I'm trying to post more helpful stuff here so I felt it ought to be more accessible.

2nd Apr: I was bumping an Expanded Calendar topic on the Help Chat yesterday, listing April's events, and we had some debate about when it is possible to obtain the April Fools avatar ('Quiguki Armageddon'). The info I have here on TEC says that you can get it by viewing the News page after the prank has been taken down on the 1st. But someone else said that they thought you could get the avatar on the 2nd, and someone else again said that they thought it was the 4th.

I'll be testing the suggested days with my side accounts (it's allowed as I won't be gaining items or neopoints) and will get back to you with the results. [C=]

1st Apr: April is here! [C:] Watch out for April Fools Day pranks.

26th Mar: This year's Festival of Neggs has commenced! According to the FAQs it will run until April 14th. Is Daily Dare likely to start during that time or afterwards?

18th Mar: Thanks to Minemoe for answering my query - I have updated the Special Issues with the information that the 'Green Alkenore' was given out to those whose work was included in this year's Illusen Day issue of the Neopian Times. [=3]

2nd Mar: In the latest Editorial, TNT has stated that the Daily Dare is being postponed until after the Tyrannia plot/war. We still do not have an exact date, however.

1st Mar: Hello, March. [=D]

28th Feb: Be sure you've picked up your Monthly Freebies for February before we turn over to March. [C=]

26th Feb: Updated the Tonu Day entry with this year's release, which was 20,000+.

24th Feb: TEC is now listed at The Parisian and Sea. [=3]

18th Feb: New entry: Anti Valentine's Day. Anti V Day has now been celebrated in the news for two years running, so there's a good chance that it is an annual event. [C=]

12th Feb: Thanks to Mercy_angel for answering my query - I have updated the Special Issues with the information that the 'Pink Flower Garland' was given out to those whose work was included in this year's Valentines Day issue of the Neopian Times. [=3]

5th Feb: Thanks to Dragonsflame_uk for answering my query - I have updated the Special Issues with the information that the 'Jhudoras Harp' was given out to those whose work was included in this year's Jhudora Day issue of the Neopian Times. [=3]

28th Jan: There's been an awful lot of hints from TNT about a new plot on the horizon, hasn't there? [=D]

23rd Jan: Hey, we're back! [=D] I temporarily took down The Expanded Calendar (and my other pages) yesterday morning because I was having some issues with the site where I host my images (a personal website, not an image-hosting site). I still am having said issues, but I've now reuploaded my images elsewhere so I can get TEC and the others back up and running.

15th Jan: Thanks to Chaotizitaet for answering my query - I have updated the Special Issues with the information that the 'Dr. Sloth Stamp' was given out to those whose work was included in the Sloth Appreciation Day issue of the Neopian Times. [=3]

9th Jan: The Fifth Annual Neopies has begun. I've updated its entry.

2nd Jan: I've been advertising TEC on the Help Chat today, in between other things. [=3] And I just received a note from Asura, a community/ranking site, telling me TEC had been featured in that week's rankings, which was very nice.

1st January 2013: Happy New Year, Neopia! We are now in Year 15 and a few little pieces of TEC have been updated to reflect this: namely the year at the top of the calendar, when third Wednesdays fall and when first and second Sundays fall. I'd like to update the Neopian Times SI entry with when Issue 600 is going to be, but I'm not sure counting forward 25 weeks from now would yield an accurate result and I don't know how else to find out. I'll look into that again nearer the time. I think that's everything that changes for the New Year, but please do let me know if I've missed something. [=D]

22nd December: Thanks to Rs_rbn for answering my query, I have updated the Special Issues with the information that the 'Christmas Chomby Plushie' was given out to those whose work was included in the Giving Day issue of the Neopian Times. [=3]

2nd December: There seems to be a new feature to the Advent Calendar this year - hidden snowflakes! Each day the Advent Calendar's new animation will include, somewhere, a snowflake. When clicked on it will reward a small prize. Go snowflake-hunting! [=D] (Thanks to Jellyneo for this info.)

1st December: It's now December! Which, of course, brings with it the Advent Calendar and other wintery things. [=D] I'll be making my usual new month advertising topic on the Help Chat - drop by if you're passing?

11th November: Thanks to Impellent for answering my query, I have updated the Special Issues with the information that the 'Edible Plushie' was given out to those whose work was included in the Halloween issue of the Neopian Times. [=3]

1st November: It's now November, so the month indicator on the Navigation has been changed. Plus I've updated the Haunted Faire entry to reflect this year's.

26th October: Swept TEC's listers today, removing the inactive.

19th October: A total of 10,000 Jetsam were released this Jetsam Day. [=3]

18th October: The Haunted Faire has returned. And according to Jellyneo, Masks of Dread will be included in the Faire as it was last year.

11th October: All the months' event listings are now noticeably shorter because I have moved the links for Monthly Freebies, Half Price Day and Hidden Tower Discount Day into the new 'Monthly' subsection under Other. ('Other' used to be 'All Year'; the All Year links have been demoted to a second subsection themselves, under the same heading.)

The Monthly subsection also sees an entirely new entry: the Game Ratio Change. I'm keeping an eye out for any more monthly events that could be added. If you think of any then do let me know, thanks. [=3]

1st October: Updated the navigation to indicate that it is now October~ [=D] And advertised on the Help Chat.

26th September: Now listed at Pixie Dust. Also, thanks to Shroom3223 for answering my query about the item for the Faerie Festival issue of the NT - for the Special Issues entry.

22nd September: The Faerie Festival was low-key again this year, as it was last year, with no real participatory activities; Poogle Day saw 11,000+ Poogles released; and the NT Special Issues has been updated with the item prize for the Chocolate Ball issue, which was a White Chocolate Lutari - Thanks to Cachorritalinda12 and Star138 for answering my inquiry about that. [C:]

3rd September: I advertised TEC on the Help Chat on the 1st, providing a list of the new month's events. And I've added a new entry to the Account Age section: Max Food Club Bet.

1st September: TEC has a new, pretty linkback button (see Sitely), requested from Seasonal. Thanks, Fangs. [=D] In other news it's now September. Myself I'm most looking forward to Talk Like A Pirate Day - how about you?

31st August: Thanks to Impellent and Pinkcrown123 who kindly answered my neomails about what item was given out for the Neopian Times' Mutant Day issue. The item was 'Dr Sloth Coin' and it has now been added to the Special Issues p2 entry. [C:]

In other news I submitted a news poster about TEC's new layout to the newly-opened Always Connected, a visual ads site.

30th August: One thing I meant to note the other day, about the new layout: It's neither centred nor using percentage widths anymore. It used to be the case that the left and right sections of this layout would each take up 49% of your screen width, whatever resolution you might be viewing in. Unfortunately I had to sacrifice this for the new look. On larger resolutions than mine the guide may appear over-narrow and will stick to the left. I'm not especially bothered by this myself, unless of course you and many others are bothered by it. But currently I see no way around the problem, so... If it does bother you especially, I'd recommend maybe zooming in a bit on your browser.

29th August: I've now proofread the Account Age section, too.

28th August: Today I've proofread most of the entries (all except for the Account Age section). This mostly involved rephrasing to make explanations clearer, inserting more paragraph breaks or adding in bits of new info or links. I did discover that TEC was somehow missing an entry for Blumaroo Day! No idea how that happened, but that grievous lack has now been rectified. [C8]

In retrospect I should maybe have split this task into two sessions. My brain feels vaguely mushy now.

27th August: Shiny new layout alert~! [=D] Well, sort of. If you're a returning visitor then you'll find the layout functions pretty much exactly as it did before, as everything's in the same place. The difference is the fresh lick of green and white paint. Goodbye grungy brown textures, hello clean simplistic webscape.

I hope you like it. [=3] I feel a tad sad letting go of the seafaring theme, but it's in the interests of making TEC feel more tidy and easy-to-use. The Kyrii image in the title is actually the shopkeeper of Mystical Surroundings... Or, er, maybe our Kyrii is the shopkeeper's brother? Who knows.

26th August: Listed at The Directory.

6th August: Added 'Neopian Times Writing Quill' as the item given out for Issue 550 in the Neopian Times Special Issues entry. Also, I was told that all Neopets were temporarily turned Mutant for the first ever Mutant Day, so I have now included that info.

2nd August: August! Hello, August! [C=] Changed the month indicator on the navigation, which I should have done yesterday but forgot. What I did do yesterday, however, was advertise TEC on the Help Chat by posting a list of this month's events and keeping it bumped up for a few hours. I may have mentioned this before but I try to do this at the beginning of every month, although I didn't do it for July because I was ill at the beginning of July. [=(]

26th July: Listed at Akakosui's Directory.

23rd July: Listed at Scamander Directory. [C=]

12th July: Now listed at Hunters Of The Links' Directory. [=3]

3rd July: I will admit to a moment of dread when the announcement about the new Community Central mentioned 'a new and improved Calendar'. [=O] But there's nothing to worry about, as it turns out. They've taken the improvement in a different direction to TEC. While the Calendar page itself looks little changed, the calendar module at the Community hub includes dates for Neo's many contests and spotlights, which I think is pretty neat. [C=]

29th June: Updated the Altador Cup entry with this year's results. Well done, Kreludor. [=3]

1st June: Hello, June! The navigation's month indicator has been updated. [C=]

23rd May: And at Delta Directory.

21st May: Listed at Maltieca.

7th May: The Expanded Calendar is one year old today! Happy Birthday, TEC. [C;]

1st May: Updated the month indicator on the navigation. [=3]

15th Apr: Since Lawyerbot Appreciation Day has now been celebrated two years running, it now has its own entry here. Check it out! [=D]

11th Apr: Now listed at The Secret Library.

10th Apr: TEC is now listed at Serendipity.

1st Apr: Hello, April! The navigation indicator has now been updated. [=3]

Monthly Freebies For You

The Freebies For You page can be visited every month for 2,000 np and a cheap food item per Neopet (main account only; side accounts are not permitted to collect this freebie).

The Freebie For You's months go by the months of the year, as opposed to a month's time; therefore, you could collect your monthly freebies on Jan 31st and then again on Feb 1st.

3rd Day - Half-Price Day

Half-Price Day takes place twelve times a year, on the 3rd of every month. It was first introduced in Y3 (2001). For 24 hours the items in most Neopian shops become for sale at half their usual price.

There are a number of exceptions to this custom: User-owned shops, the Hidden Tower, Almost Abandoned Attic, General Store, Neohome Superstore, Igloo Garage Sale, Smuggler's Cove, Little Nippers, Neolodge and NC Mall are all excluded.

3rd Wednesday - Hidden Tower Discount Day

On the third Wednesday of every month, users whose accounts are 60+ months (5+ years) can buy items sold in the Hidden Tower at a 3% discount. Jellyneo has a Price Viewer that calculates the effect this discount has upon the available items.

As the Hidden Tower is a shop, buying from it is ordinarily restricted to main accounts only. However, TNT stated in Editorial 443 (2nd question down) that users may choose one of their accounts, be it main or side, with which to buy from the Hidden Tower on discount day. This is to allow users whose main accounts are younger than their side accounts to utilise this discount. The required neopoints must still be supplied by the user's main account, however.

25th Day - Game Ratio Change

Game ratios are how many in-game points are to a Neopoint. When you send your score in a game the points you have scored are converted into Neopoints based on this ratio. As well as varying from game to the game, the ratios also fluctuate from month to month. It is the 25th day of the month when this change takes place.

According to Editorial 334 (4th question down) the ratio changes are controlled by 'an automated system that adjusts the ratio to help balance out the flow of Neopoints into Neopia'.

Neopian Times Special Issues

The Neopian Times observes a number of Neopia's holidays. The issue falling on the Friday before or after the holiday often features a specially themed layout and writers and artists contributing to these issues may receive an item prize alongside the usual trophy. The 50th issues are treated similarly.

It has been known for a holiday to not be celebrated in this way, even when it has been before. This is based on the amount of stories, articles and comics that are themed on the holiday; if not enough of these are submitted and accepted then the special issue may not take place.

  • 600th Issue: [due when?]

Continue to page two for a history of the item prizes awarded for these issues.

NT Special Issue Item Prizes

Go back?

The following is an incomplete history of the Special Issue item prizes. If you have any more information then I would love to know, thanks.

While most Special Issue prizes draw from pre-existing items, the 50th issues appear to have all awarded exclusive NT-themed items.

50th Issues

  • 2012: Issue 550 | Item: Neopian Times Writing Quill
  • 2011: Issue 500 | Item: Neopian Times Background
  • 2010: Issue 450 | Item: Neopian Times Writing Quill

  • 2005: Issue 200 | Item: Neopian Times 200th Anniversary Card

April Fool's Day (1st Apr)
April Fool's Day is not strictly a Special Issue at all. It wasn't considered an occasion within the Neopian Times until a group of writers and artists started devising annual pranks by submitting multiple pieces about an invented topic. The day has never been marked with its own theme and, as you can see below, has not been know to give out item prizes.

Daylight Saving Time

Neopia observes daylight saving time (the practice of temporarily advancing clocks during the summertime so that afternoons have more daylight and mornings have less). Since Neopets' headquarters are located in California, Neopian Standard Time (NST) follows the same daylight saving time as Pacific Standard Time (PST).

  • Daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday of March. Clocks are turned forward an hour at 02:00 am NST.
  • Daylight saving time ends on the first Sunday of November. Clocks are turned backward an hour at 02:00 am NST.

Festival of Neggs (Easter equivalent)

The tradition of celebrating Neopia's neggs began in Y12 (2010) and was led by Kari, the Negg Faerie. The current 'Festival of Neggs' may be considered to have superseded the Neggtacular Springtime Celebration (hosted by Rosie) of Y11 (2009).

The Festival has involved Neopians in a variety of negg-related activities, giving out many items and other awards. It has taken place on the following dates:

  • 2013: March 25th - April 14th
  • 2012: April 2nd - April 22nd
  • 2011: April 6th - May 5th
  • 2010: March 15th - April 12th

The Neopian Times holds a Special Issue that coincides with Easter.

This dates from the first Gnorbu Day in Y9 (2007) when their images were also adjusted so that they appeared sheared. The full shearing has not happened again since the introduction of Customisation.

This has happened in Y6, Y9, Y10 and Y12. Whether he does take over the news or not, there will be a news post dedicated to him to introduce new Sloth-related items.

Today the I *heart* Sloth avatar can be obtained by completing the test at the Mind Control Laboratory.

In 2010 the Daily Dare was half a month early, stretching from February 11th to March 14th, but this anomaly has not reoccurred.

In 2012 it only lasted for 18 days instead of a full month.

In early March 2013, TNT stated in the Editorial that the Daily Dare was being postponed until after the Tyrannia plot/war. They did not give an exact date, however.

The first instance of March 3rd being cancelled was in 2004, when TNT explained that, since they were updating the times that daily content was released, the 3rd would essentially be cancelled because there would be no news. Following this they have continued to announce March 3rd's cancellation most years, citing a 'lack of interest' as a joke.

Nothing that also happens on March 3rd - such as Half-Price Day or your birthday - is in any way affected by this.

The Neopian Times holds a Special Issue in observance of this day.

25th Aug - Mutant Day

Mutant Day originated as a 'random theme' for the news of August 25th, Y6 (2004) and has since become an annual celebration. It introduces Mutant-themed items and often the Mutant colour for either one or two species of Neopet. On its first day, in Y6, all Neopets were temporarily turned the Mutant colour for the day, but this has not happened since.

Since Dr. Sloth is responsible for the creation of Mutant pets he has been known to take over the news on their day (Y12) as well as on his own.

The Neopian Times holds a Special Issue that coincides with Easter.

Despite implications to the contrary, there is no actual location in Neopia where you can go to attend the ball.

The Neopian Times holds a Special Issue in observance of this day.

17/21st Sept - Faerie Festival

The Faerie Festival is an annual event where the faeries of Neopia can let their hair down and have a good time.

The event began in Y6 (2004) and was initially only been celebrated with the Healing Springs faerie being particularly generous (healing all Neopets to full hit points and curing any illnesses) and with a Faerie-themed news post.

However with the fifth festival in Y11 (2009) the celebrations took on a larger scale; from September 17th to October 1st users could participate by completing minor challenges for daily item prizes. The following year's festival appeared to be in the same vein until, three days in, all the Faeries and a pie were turned to stone and The Faeries' Ruin plot commenced.

The festival made a return to the low-key format of previous years in Y13 (2011) and Y14 (2012).

The Neopian Times holds a Special Issue that coincides with Easter.

19th Sept - International Talk Like A Pirate Day

International Talk Like A Pirate Day is a parodic holiday invented in 1995 and is not in any way affiliated with Neopets. However, it is regularly celebrated in Neopia: Although there is rarely mention of it in the news, it is hard to miss on the Neoboards due to the special filter TNT puts into effect for the day. The filter changes many common words into pirate versions, such as 'yes' to 'aye'. To add to the chaos, users posting on the Neoboards do not see the effect the 'pirate filter' has on their own posts; they only see everyone else suddenly speaking like sailors gone bad.

19th Sept - Poogle Day (a.k.a. Poogle Parade)

October - Haunted Faire

Some years a small Trick-Or-Treat hunt was held in October, in which users could find Trick-Or-Treat bags in certain spots around Neopia. In Y12 (2010) this idea was expanded upon with the Haunted Faire, a month-long event that introduced the Apple Bobbing daily (which is run by a Gnorbu named Bart). During the Y12 event, Apple Bobbing would (in addition to its usual good and bad prizes) offer users quests that, once completed, awarded various other items or the Lost Desert, Space Station, Mystery Isle, Moltara and Krawk Island Trick-or-Treat Bags.

The Haunted Faire Y13 (2011) featured a new method of dispensing the Trick-or-Treat bags: From the 25th users could participate in Masks of Dread, in which a Cybunny named Saskia gifted wearable masks and quests together. Completion of the quests awarded various items and, on the sixth and final quest, awarded the Sidney, Skarl, Gavril, Bonju and Saskia Trick-or-Treat Bags.

Saskia's Masks of Dread reprised its role in Y14 (2012), this time awarding the Wheel of Fortune, Haunted Weaponry, Prigpants, Magax and Castle Nox Trick-or-Treat Bags.

Below is a record of when the Haunted Faire has started and finished in previous years.

Hubrid Nox's memorial day was first celebrated in Y13, following the villain's demise during The Faeries' Ruin plot the year before (this incident can be seen in the TFR comic, on the second page of Chapter 5). The Memorial Day may have come about due to an Editorial question in Issue 474 of the Neopian Times (4th down).

The day includes a Nox- and TFR-themed news post, which in Y13 also introduced the Ghost colour for the Lutari. Also, a free Castle Nox Corridor of Chance Key 1-Pack became available from the NC Mall.

[NT Editorial Issue 515 stated that this would not be an annual event.]

10th Oct - Eyrie Day

The Eyrie (ear-ree) has been around since Neopets' creation in Y1 (1999), though it was originally known as the Cerpull and then the Tatsu before it became the Eyrie.

16th Oct - Jetsam Day

The Jetsam (jet-sam) has been around since Neopets' creation in Y1 (1999). Jetsam is a word meaning 'articles thrown overboard from a ship or boat in order to lighten the load'. They were not originally Limited Edition, but replaced the Flotsam as such in Y3 (2001).

As on all pet days, the celebrated species is treated to free training at The Swashbuckling Academy (under level 40 only) and will have a news post dedicated to them (sometimes a day late or early) usually introducing two new colour options and various related items.

31st Oct - Halloween

Halloween in Neopia offers a number of perks and activities:

As well as a Halloween-themed news post, often introducing the Halloween colour for one species of Neopet, Deadly Dice can be played at any time of the day, as can Edna be challenged in the Battledome at any time of the day.

The Haunted Woods site theme (also known as the Halloween site theme) can be obtained today by refreshing during the minute of midnight Neopian Standard Time; i.e. between 11:59:00pm and 11:59:59pm NST. The theme is granted through a 'Something Has Happened' event. You do not have to refresh on the Haunted Woods pages; anywhere on the site should work.

The Neopian Times holds a Special Issue in observance of this day.

November - Games Master Challenge

An annual event beginning in Y8 (2006) - when the Games Room received an updated layout - in which AAA poses a series of game-related challenges for seven or eight consecutive days. Each day brings a new set of challenges with simple clues as to what must be done to complete them. They can vary from achieving a certain score in a certain game, to favouriting or rating certain games, or to achieving a total number of games played. There are daily item prizes and, at the end, trophies. As of Y11 (2009) Lulu has also featured in the GMC, representing an extra, Neocash element to the event.

In Y13 (2011) the GMC's format was somewhat reinvented: Including Abigail (usually only seen in the Daily Dare) in the event, it became 'Brains vs. Brawn' with AAA and Abigail representing Team Brains and Team Brawn respectively. Players chose which team to support for the week - a choice that was best made strategically, since the type of games they would then be playing reflected the brain/brawn divide. Lulu also returned with another Neocash element this year.

The format was similar in Y14 (2012) but with slight differences: The two teams became Team Pirate and Team Ninja and these were represented by Cap'n Threelegs and the Techo Master respectively.

  • 2012: 19th-26th (Team Ninja won)
  • 2011: 21st-28th (Team Brains won)
  • 2010: 23rd-29th

December - Winter Starlight Celebration

In Y11 (2009) much of note in December was linked together through the 'Winter Wonderfest' in Terror Mountain, which was substituted the following year and onwards by the Winter Starlight Celebration.

In Y13 (2011) an additional feature of the Winter Starlight Celebration was the Snowager's hibernation, which allowed players to steal treasure from the creature's cave without the usual risk of being blasted with ice (once a day).

December - Advent Calendar

The Advent Calendar has been a regular daily for the month of December since Y2 (2000). Users can visit each day for a new animation and two to three item prizes, as well as small gifts of neopoints.

In Y14 (2012) the Advent Calendar included a new feature where the image of a snowflake was included somewhere in each day's animation. When the snowflake was clicked on the user was awarded an additional prize.

The 'Plastic Fir' avatar can be obtained by visiting the Advent Calendar on December 1st. The 'Seasonal Attack Pea' avatar is also available on a certain day of the Calendar, but the day varies every year and cannot be predicted. The 'Winter Holiday' site theme is, again, available from the Calendar - however, the exact requirements for earning it are unknown, beyond the fact that it seems to be more complex than simply visiting on a certain day.

A running gag of the Advent Calendar features the Pant Devil stealing the user's daily prize - usually the 'Rod of Supernova', a rare and expensive item - on a random day of the Calendar. Nobody is actually intended to receive the Rod of Supernova as their prize and nobody ever does.
