Promotions are in place to recognise guild members who are active and thoughtful members of the guild. The guild likes to promote people who donate, participate in guild activities and who post thoughtfully on the guild message board. Promotion does not come automatically to members who seek to "buy" a promotion or to those who seek to post messages in great quantity to appear active. The size of the guild membership is unimportant the quality of members is.

So how does the actual process work?
Every month the guild shopkeepers compile a list from their donation records. They give each member a rating from between 0 - 5 points, depending on donations received. It isn't necessarily the greatest amount of donations that will give the highest rating, for example, 20 battledome elixirs given out by the healing springs will not give as good a rating as one listed weapon. So quality of donation rather than quantity is always a good course to take. At certain times different shops will post a list of items that they are particularly short of or that are popular with members' requests. Donations of these items will be looked most favourably upon. Neopoints are valuable to guild shops as they are used to purchase the rarer items.
I usually receive all the shop and activity reports by the third of the month. I then have to go through every mentioned member, cross checking the reports for total donation rating points.
I then check the monitors list to see if the member has received any reminders or warnings which could result in no promotion that month.
Neomail settings also have to be checked as members should be able to receive all mail, to enable the various guild accounts to contact them.. Members should also have completed their first week in the guild and have posted five messages.
I also have print outs of members message totals. I use these to see who is active in some way on the boards. These can be used in the borderline promotion cases, where I may award a point or two, depending on demeanor on the message board. So once again it isn't the quantity of messages that will help in promotion but the quality. I monitor the boards daily and keep notes on helpful posters etc.

F.A.Q.
Why wasn't I promoted?
Maybe the items that you donated were not sufficient to give you enough promotion points. You also must have been a member of the guild for a week or more and posted five messages. The other possibility is that you received a reminder or warning from the monitor that month.
Why has a newer member been promoted?
They have donated thoughtfully and generously and have met all other requirements.
Why have some people with zero posts been promoted?
Ah, this is very unusual. They are children of guild members who are unable to post on the board but who have donated generously, so the guild wanted to recognise this.
Are promotion points ever carried over into a new month?
No, points are not carried over. The first two levels of promotion, Apprentice and Librarian, are not too difficult to attain. The rank of Professor is harder to reach. To allow for points to be carried over would undervalue this rank. Members who achieve Professor status have usually been in the guild for a certain length of time. They have proved themselves to be good, active members in many ways.
Is anyone ever demoted?
It is possible to be demoted but not usual. If people continuously break the posting rules it could result in a demotion.
Those members that show no guild activity i.e. donations, set activities and /or posting on the board for six months, but who do log into Neopets, will be demoted a rank. A neomail, warning of this possibility, will be sent first. Members that haven't logged into their accounts in over six months and old, frozen accounts will be removed from the guild altogether.

If, after reading all of the above you feel that you still have a case for promotion and that I may have overlooked you, please neomail me at my personal account or to the monitor account and I will look into it again. I am human and am not perfect so mistakes may happen. Hopefully the system I use will mean few mistakes:) Any member found flaming the board rather than neomailing me as requested will feel the weight of my special baguette.

Promotion Rules
Rule 1: RANKS
The ranks available to all guild members are, in order, Bookworm, Apprentice, Librarian, and Professor. In order to be eligible for promotion to a higher rank:
a.) You need to be a member of the Guild in good standing. (This means no rules violations, after your first week in the guild.) b.) You need to make donations to the Guild shops.
c.) Bookworms must post an introductory message and set personal preference to accept neomail messages from anyone.
d.) You need to stay active in the Guild either by posting helpful and interesting messages or by entering Guild activities or both.
Rule 2: EXEMPLARY BEHAVIOR
Those exhibiting exemplary behavior will be promoted faster, at the discretion of the Senior Monitor, with input from the shopkeepers.
Examples of exemplary behavior include:
routinely donating from shop wishlists, especially helpful posting on the message board, and consistently maintaining a positive and helpful attitude.
Behaviors that may cause members to be promoted more slowly include those explained in the posting rules (spamming, begging, etc.).
Rule 3: DEMOTIONS
Any begging, advertising, or spamming can lead to demotion. Two (2) warnings will be given before demoting you.
Rule 4: BANISHMENT
Five (5) warnings will result in being banned from the guild as will extremely bad behaviour or extremely bad posting violations.
