The story of the

Volcanic Rock Pile

The Volcanic Rock Pile contains: 14,295 rocks
and at 10 lb/rock weighs: 71.5 tons or 64,841 kilos!

1) Why are you collecting volcanic rocks?

  1. I am trying to build my own volcano in my safety deposit box.
  2. I am artificially inflating the price of vol. rocks to aid the economy of destitute mystery islanders.
  3. I was deprived of vol. rocks as a child and now I'm trying to compensate for it.
  4. I am very rich and eccentric.

A Million billion years ago, when I started playing Neopets, my first Pet was Harlock999 and the very first item I ever owned was a volcanic rock.

It looked exactly the same way they look today - purple and pock-marked. I found it somewhere while I still still trying to figure out exactly what you were supposed to do other then play Codebreakers.

I was in awe of it... look at the description:

Name : Volcanic Rock
Weight : 10 lbs.
Rarity : 44
Cost (approx) : 132 NP

Not your ordinary rock. These volcanic rocks come from the sacred volcano. The natives believe that the volcano is the source of all life on the island.

Value 132.... 132!. I was in awe of it. I quickly put it away in my safety deposit box, because I didn't want the pant devil to take it.

Hard times at the Soup Kitchen

A week later, I've built a shop and like lots of newbies, and discovered games like Scorchy Slots. I'm selling my omelettes and feeding poor Harlock999 at the soup kitchen. I decide I'm going to sell my volcanic rock, my precious... so I look it up on the shop wizard and..

Well, nothing helpful. At the time, the shop wizard sorted shops by their size, so Alombar42's shop always came up first, and it's too huge to navigate. I found a smaller shop and...

It was worth 1 NP. I put an add in the OLD message boards trying to sell it. People laughed and told me that they usually threw them away because they weren't worth anything. Two of them gave me another one.

So there I sat, three volcanic rocks in hand... all my worldly possessions. A lenny on my knee and the moon overhead.
Did I cry?
Did I give up?
No.

I said to my Lenny, "Harlock, one day... when I'm rich and eccentric, I'm going to own every volcanic rock in the lands. I'm going to revere them like they should be revered. These are sacred stones. They deserve better. One day, Harlock... one day...

Now I'm Rich and Eccentric

And I'm going to do what I said I would.

Beggers, panhandlers... get off my doorstep. I made my hard-earned NP in the NEODAQ and shop wizard. Now I'm going to do what I wanted to do. And I'm not going to stop until I look on the shop wizard and see those beautiful numbers: 132.

Volcanic rock trivia!
With thanks to tobey158

The volcanic rocks featured in the volcanic rock pile are either scoria or vesicular basalt (pretty much the same thing, except the scoria has more holes in it), meaning they formed from bubbly, fast flowing mafic lava. Thus, they probably came from a shield volcano, since fast flowing mafic lava tends to form shield volcanoes. Also, basalt is a mafic rock, meaning it's composed of mainly pyroxene and amphibole, and the magma that formed it came from deep within the earth. Thus, these rocks were probably formed at mid-ocean ridges or hot spots (where magma from deep within the earth comes to the surface), rather than at subduction zones (where slabs of the earth's crust sink into the mantle, melt, and rise again as felsic magma). Basalt is an extrusive igneous rock, meaning it formed on the surface of the earth, cooling quickly, as opposed to staying underground and cooling slowly, in which case it would have become gabbro.

Wow, what a fascinating load of schist!
