For some time now, I've been getting emails asking me how I've been able to build my shop up and earn so many neopoints.  Well, it's time to just write them out once instead of numerous times.

First, let me say, there are no get rich quick schemes.  There are no secrets that someone can sell you to help you get rich quick.  About the only thing that does is build their bank account real quick before they get frozen.  Copying and pasting any message numerous times is only a scam and the only thing I've seen come of it is people getting their accounts frozen.

But have heart.  There is a way to build up a small fortune.  It can be done and it can be done honestly.

If you look at my account, it says I have been a Neopian for 11 months.  Well, truth be told, I've only been an active Neopian for about three months now.  I signed up about a year ago to catch someone who was stealing my bandwidth from my graphic site.  I never did catch the thief, but they had a nice little stolen graphic sign instead. I don't take well to scammers or thieves.  I am an honest person who prefers to do things honestly.

I am also a 37 year old business professional.  I have run my own shipping business and know what it takes to make a business work.  I currently am an advertising specialist who is home on disability recovering from a snowboarding injury four years ago that has been festering ever since.  A word of wisdom from the wise... people over 30 should not attempt to ride a snowboard for the first time in their lives.  There is an invisible warning label that advises of this that I somehow over looked.  So, while I sit here waiting for my new hip and back surgery, I sit here racking up a small fortune.  If I were to liquidate my holdings right now I would be more than a millionaire so I feel that I am able to give you some good advice for building a fortune of your own.

Yes, I have built this fortune in three months and have given away more than I have kept.  With following the advice of those before you who have done it, you too can soon have a small fortune.  I do not claim to know it all.  I know I don't.  There are plenty of Neopian's out there that know more than me about the site and if you can get them to share their secrets, then you are better off to listen to everyone who has successful built an honest fortune and learning from them all.  We each have our own way of earning points and running our shops.  Mine is only one way.  It may not be the best way and I am always willing to learn as you should be too.

Here is how I have gone from a zero account to becoming a millionaire.

First off, the real secret of Neopia is running a good shop.  Other than the MegaMalls here at Neopia, we are all your typical Mom and Pop garden variety store.  We must run our businesses wisely and honestly or else it won't be long before your shop eats your pocket book bone dry.

There are several things to remember about running a good shop here.  First off, in the real world, location is everything.  Well, here in Neopia that stands in a different light.  Loading time is everything.  If you have a shop that is loaded down with graphics and music that require a long time to load, people will go shopping elsewhere.  Now, at the same time, you must make the shop your own and make it warm feeling showing that you put time into it.  There is a fine balance and the best way to find out if you have balanced your shop is to visit the message boards and ask a variety of people to visit your shop and give you feed back.  While not everyone will put it nicely if you have a bad store, take it to heart and do something about it.  Over look the rudeness and find the problem.  Listen to those that have been here a while and know what they are talking about.  Don't be talked into putting music in your shop if it is slowing down the loading time.  While some of the shop blogs out there are cute, they are extremely irritating to shoppers who have a limited time on the computer or a slower dial up connection.  You must try to make your shop easy to get into and out of without having to spend a lot of time.  My shop is pushing the limits on loading time and is going to get an overall shortly since I now have the time to do it.

If you would like to see an example of how to make your shop look like your own and be pleasing to the eye and load fast, visit peckmom3's shop.  I designed the graphics by her suggestions and she did a wonderful job making it her own.

Your stock is the next important thing.  You can take two approaches to this.  I have chosen to go with a variety of stock.  I try to keep a big selection in so that there is something for everyone.  Peckmom3 and Mindzeye are good examples of specialty shops.  They stock one basic theme, peckmom3 has school supplies while Mindzeye has plushies.  This can be a great way to go for the beginner too and I will explain why later.  But first you must decide what you are going to stock.  If you go with a variety of items you have the freedom of picking up any good deals you find along the way while if you stock only a certain item, you have the luxury of knowing easily when you find a good buy and can build a client base of collectors.

Which ever way you decide to go, there are some rules that apply to all businesses that are out to make a profit.  You must use good business sense.  Don't worry if you haven't gone to college for business, most of it is common sense.  Applying it here at Neopia is not much different than doing it in the real world.

The biggest secret to any store is the prices.  Especially here in Neopia where we have a shop wizard that will search for the lowest priced item and enough stores out there to choose from.  You can not run a successful shop by pricing your items high.  Most people will not donate to a shop.  Guild shops designed for the guild members to purchase things to support the guild do not fall into this category, and I do not agree with their doing this, but that is another story for another day.  Sometimes you can find good deals in their shops, but they are there for a different reason than what you are asking for here.

It is better to earn a little on a lot of items than it is to try to earn a lot off of one item and end up sitting on it forever.  Remembering this will be the key.  The more you can sell, the faster you will establish a solid shop with customers that return and more customers that will find your shop and tell others about it.  Word of mouth advertising is the best thing you could ever ask for.  To get this, you must have a shop that is competitively priced.  The Shop Wizard is our friend, he will tell us what our competitors are selling the same items for.  While the Shop Wizard will list several prices at once, don't be fooled into thinking that if you pick the bottom price, you are competitively priced.  You want to price your shop at the lowest possible price.

Now, there is a trick to this too.  Several times you will run the Shop Wizard to check a price and find something priced ridiculously low.  While you want to price your stock at the lowest possible price, that does not mean you have to be silly about it.  Take the opportunity and go buy that really low item that is showing up.  You can turn around and sell it at the normal low price.  Once you have run the Shop Wiz a few times, you will see what I am talking about and get the hang of it quickly.  Pricing your stock this way not only gives you a competitive price, it will often give you a back up stock to sell in the future.

While it is very tempting to take your profits and head off to buy a paintbrush or something you have always wanted, but you must remember that in order to run a successful shop, you must keep it stocked.  Spending your profits to buy more stock is always a wise idea.  You can buy some items in the main shops of Neopia.  While you can get some really good deals shopping this way, I suggest that you learn the prices well before you head off to do this.  Some items in the shops are way more expensive than the player owned shops.  A good example of this is "Sandals".  You can buy them in most player owned shops for 1 NP each.  You can also pick them up at auction for 2 NP each.  However, if you go to purchase them at the Tiki Tack, you will pay 300 NP each for them.  Another good example of this is key rings.  They come cheap in the player shops, many for around 20 NP a piece.  However, in the toy store, you are going to pay over 100 NP each for the same item.  You must know the deals from the rip offs before you head into the shops.  Until you are familiar with the going prices, I suggest sticking with the Shop Wizard until you learn.  You can often find good deals this way and still be able to price your stuff low enough to be the lowest on the wiz.  While you are just starting out, I suggest keeping a notebook handy to write down the prices.  Don't be afraid to run the Shop Wiz while you are searching a player owned shop to check the prices.  You might save yourself from making costly purchases by doing so.

Once you have stocked your shop and have priced everything, you are ready for business.  Don't be afraid to advertise your shop on the Shop Ads message boards.  Don't just place an ad and leave.  The message board moves quickly and your ad won't be visible for very long.  Spend some time posting your ad into threads or boards that people have started saying that they are looking for good cheap shops.  Make sure to read their post and that you have what they are looking for.  False advertising is the worst thing you can do and will anger many people.  If they ask for a cheap shop and you have priced your items high, do not post.

Now, the size of your shop is important.  Don't try to grow your shop faster than you can afford.  A good rule of thumb is to keep enough stock in your safe deposit box to completely stock your shop.  If you can not you should not grow your shop bigger.  Once you have a good back up supply, then consider growing, until then, start slow and grow at the rate that you can afford.  If you can't fill the store, you aren't gaining anything, you are loosing out.  So, make sure you can keep an ample supply in your safe deposit box and keep it full too.

Are you ready for the biggest way to help your shop grow?  This is going to sound funny to those who don't live it, but you do reap what you sow.  What does this mean?  Simply treat others and you would want to be treated and be generous.  If you bless others, you will be blessed in return.  It may not be right away, but what ever you do will eventually be returned to you.  I spend a lot of money helping out by giving people the items they need for quests without asking for anything in return.  I am not there to get, I am there to give.  Many times people will bless me with a present for being nice enough to give to them.  Many will go and shop in my store to return the kindness.  And many more will simply just take the item and disappear into Neopia never to be heard from again.  But, by being generous and kind, the biggest rewards are mine because I know I have made someone's night and made playing the game more fun.  After all, they are only neopoints, and you can't spend them in the real world.  It truly is much better to give than to receive.  Try it and you will find that this is not foolishness but good sound advice.

Now, if you are just starting out, games are a really good thing.  I spent many of hours playing games to get enough points to go out and buy lots of stock.  I also spent the points helping others.  Games are here so that we can easily earn points, take advantage of it and use the points to help your store grow.  In time, you will be like me and just playing the games for fun when you feel like it.  My shop brings in the most of my points and I don't mind telling you that there was a time when I did have to play games just to keep buying stock and growing my shop.

Don't be afraid to utilize every resource available here at Neopets to help grow your shop.  If you are in a store and find an item for 1 NP, buy it.  You can place it in auction and sell it for the minimum bid of 2 NP.  You have doubled your money.  It takes a long time to make money like that since you can only auction eight things at a time, but any time you can double your money it's a good thing.

Surfing the messages boards not only give you a chance to advertise your shop, it gives you a good idea of what people are looking for.  By helping on quests, you learn what items are going for quests.  Those are always a good thing to stock because the people must by somewhere.  If you keep your prices low, chances a lot better that people will find your shop.  Surfing the trades board will give you a good idea of what the unbuyable items are and what they are really worth.  By giving away items on the quest board, you can often find shops with some good deals with prices a lot lower than the wiz price.  Always keep your eyes out for a good deal, you never know when or where you might find one.

The third of every month is half price day in the shops.  Take advantage of it.  I spend an average of 100,000 points the last two half price days.  I almost made the pack rat avi from that day alone.   Items go really fast on this day and if you have a slow connection, chances are that you are not going to get much from the main Neopian shops.  I suggest heading to the shops in other areas such as the Lost Desert, Faerieland, Terror Mountain or Tyrannia.  You have to be fast no matter where you shop on that day, but the rewards are well worth it.

I think that is about it for how I have gone from zero to over a million in only three months.  I can't guarantee that this will work for you, but, it is how I have done it and that is the only thing I can tell you.  I do hope that these suggestions will help you to soon become a millionaire also.  Remember, there are no get rich quick schemes, but by running a good and honest shop with low prices, you can build up a small fortune honestly and know that you did it fairly.

So there you have it.  How Frisky Business runs and makes a profit.  I hope that soon you will be giving advise to those that come along asking.

One more thing to remember, no one likes a beggar.  We all have earned our points that have them and while we may not mind helping someone out sometimes, no one likes a beggar especially one that will not take no for an answer.

If you still have any questions after reading this, please feel free to neomail me!

Sincerely,

cg
