Every spring the trees would bloom with the most beautiful pink cherry blossoms; the whole mountainside would burst into pink, creating a certain magic about the place. In the winter, the mountains kept chilling winds from entering...so everything remained green and enchanting. My favorite place was at the pond; a large waterfall ran into it and colorful fish would play with me when I swam. Everything was perfect back then...everyone was happy and Iris was growing up. But one day, everything changed. The little lupe, pig-tails fluttering, was running up the path through her village carrying a basket full of flowers to bring home when someone came running toward her, crashing into her and sending both she and her flowers flying back. It seemed the whole village was running toward her, trampling her into the dirt. But what was happening? Iris' mother was frantic, searchingeverywhere for her youngest little girl. Iris' father was nowhere to be found...at least, to her knowledge. The truth is, he was with all the other fathers, fighting, trying to protect their families from the monstrosities that were beginning to enter the village. He died that day, but Iris still doesn't know....so don't tell her. Not yet... Finally, Iris was roughly scooped into the arms of her mother who barely had enough time to get her daughter before a creature came crashing through the group of villagers that surrounded her, sending bits and pieces of bodies flying, crimson raining down on their heads. They never made it out...a vast darkness covered the entire village, killing all hope of life. Iris' mother held onto her daughter, knowing this was the end. Iris cuddled into her mother's bosom, listening to her heartbeat. Iris noticed a sudden change in the beats; they were getting faster and faster. Then her mothers hands became cold as stone. In fact, they were stone. Though Iris could not see it, everything and everyone was turning into stone. She felt the stinging sensation creep up her spine and could not move her legs. She too was turning into a statue. She began to cry and once again cuddled into her mothers now cold, hard chest. Soon, her entire body could not move. She was the last to fall into despair; her small whimpering was the only sound in the darkness. And soon, she too was quiet and cold. Strangely enough, Iris kept living in that shell of stone. It was as if she had been trapped in a cocoon; she grew and grew until one day, she could once again move. She could hear her own heartbeat within her stone casing. She opened her eyes but could not see. Somehow a warm liquid had filled the casing, enveloping her entirely. She started moving gently at first, then began flailing and kicking. Eventually, a small crack formed on the outside of her encasement that wound around it in all directions. She kicked one last time and burst onto the floor, coughing and gasping for air. Though weak, she tried to stand, unable to hold herself up for a very long time. Everything around her was dark yet, somehow, she knew there was a way out. She began crawling in one direction, panting, tears coming to her eyes. She had been reborn, her memories lost at this time, but why? All she knew at this point was to get out.
