Welcome

Welcome to my guide for Feed Florg! Since no one else in Neopia seems to want to make a guide for this frustrating game, I figured I might as well do it. I may not have a gold trophy in Feed Florg, but I understand the game well enough to obtain the avatar and teach others how to get there too. So sit back, settle in, and grab yourself a box of petpets, it's time to learn how to play Feed Florg!

The Game

The point of Feed Florg is simple: keep the petpets on the table so Florg can eat them. You only have five lives, and there is no code for extras, so you have to be careful! Sometimes, Florg will leave you to push petpets back and forth for what feels like ages while he sits there and cries.

Controls & Scoring

There are two ways to control your 'hand' in Feed Florg. You can either use your mouse, or arrow keys. I personally find arrow keys much easier. When using the arrow keys, pressing the right arrow moves your hand clockwise and pressing the left arrow key moves your hand in a counter-clockwise direction.

To the right, we have an image of some of the various important aspects of the playing field.
I. The big ugly blue and green thing at the top of the screen is Florg. He's the reason you're here-to feed him. Mostly, he just sits there and throws a fit, but he also sticks out his tongue and takes petpets off your board. However, sometimes he seems to become too absorbed in his crying and whining to notice that you've got four petpets running in different directions.
II. This is the hand that you control. When using the arrow keys or moving your mouse, this is what will respond. You need to manuver this hand in front of the petpets to keep them from falling off the table. The red arrows on either side of the hand show possible directions of movement. Pressing the right arrow moves you clockwise around the table, and the left arrow moves you counter-clockwise around the table. Knowing which arrow moves you where is important because sometimes one direction will be a slight bit shorter than the other.
III. This is a petpet. Keep these guys on the table. There are six different petpets that can appear. Kookiths, Tennas, Slorgs, Spyders, Hassee, and Warfs can appear on the screen, dropped into the center to scurry off in a random direction by a crane-type thing.
IV. This is rather self-explanatory. This meter shows you how many lives you have left. You loose a life every time a petpet escapes your hand and falls off the table. Ironicly, every time you loose a live, a petpet's is saved.
V. This shows your score. You gain 1 point when a petpet bounces off your hand, and 10 points when Florg eats a petpet.
VI. Simply an End Game button. If you click it, your game is over and you will go to the screen where you can either Send Score or Restart and return to the Main Menu. There should not be a problem with accidentally clicking this to end your game early, because there's no clicking involved.

Strategy

Feed Florg is listed as a strategy and action game. However, the strategy I teach and abide by is neither terrificly complicated nor hard to think up. But it works. That's my philosophy with Feed Florg-don't make things more complicated than they have to be.
The first step to my simple strategy is easy-turn off the sound. The cries of petpets, Florg, and the growls and clanks of the crane can be distracting, and saddening, if you stop to think about all the semi-expensive petpets Florg is devouring. Watch carefully how quickly each petpet moves before and after you touch it. Once you've hit a petpet once, it will begin to move more quickly, but hitting it again will not make it faster. So, basically, petpets have two speeds. When there are multiple petpets on the board, make sure you know which has been there the longest, and how fast each petpet is moving. However, remember that Florg will not always eat the petpet that has been on the board the longest. In fact, he sometimes leaves you to prod a petpet back and forth for ages while he happily munches on a petpet as it is just set down on the board!
There are some basic life-loss rules that you should try to follow if you're going for the avatar. Try not to loose a life until at least 50-60 points. By the time you are at 200 points, try to have 2-3 lives remaining.
Remember, these are only guidelines. Sometimes Florg has other plans for your game, and sometimes the petpets will wander off at impossible angles, making you choose between two petpets. If this happens, save the closest petpet first, but don't be indecisive and end up between the two petpets when they both reach the edge-you'll loose two lives when you could have saved one! This demonstrates the random element of Feed Florg, you can't control where the petpets are going to run, how fast they're going to run, or when Florg is going to stick out his tongue and eat one up. You just have to take a deep breath and move on with the game when you become frustrated with this random aspect.

Extra Tips

Distraction Turn off the sound before you start playing. Sound in a game is usually distracting, though in some games, like Typing Terror, it can actually be helpful. But in Feed Florg, it's just there to distract you from your objective. I like to turn on some of my own music, though I keep it rather quiet too. If there are other things in your computer space to distract you, move them, or be prepared to ignore them for the 10-15 minutes it takes to complete a game of Feed Florg.
ScoreDon't sit there and peek at your score every half second, it will seem like it is not going up at all. Trust me, when there start to be 3-4 petpets on the screen at a time, you'll know that you're getting close. A glance once in a while won't kill you, but don't become so fixated on the score that you lose track of the game. The same idea applies to lives, know how many you have, but don't stare at them, you'll end up losing another!
Relax Don't get too frustrated with the game. Remember, it's only that-a game. If you're getting to the point of smashing your keyboard or stuffing the petpets down Florg's throat, take a deep breath, close your eyes, and take a break. Play a different game, talk to some friends, or get up and stretch. Come back to the game when you're relaxed and happy, you'll play better.

Good Luck

What more is there to say beyond good luck? 'Happy Florg Feeding' I suppose. :] In any case, have fun, and I hope this guide helps you achieve a good score in Feed Florg!
