The Best Defence: A quick guide to using shields and dual-duty items in the Battledome.

Those who train their Defence statistic for use in the Battledome have a distinct advantage over
otherwise equal opponents who only train Strength/Endurance, if they equip the proper items and
learn how to utilize them effectively.

Reasons to use a shield in the Battledome:
While fighting in the Battledome, there are times you want to use a shield or other defensive item.
For instance, when facing an opponent using a powerful, but limited, weapon such as a single-use
bomb, a shield can help block some or all of the attacker's icons, if you correctly predict the turn
that it will be used against you. Alternately, you may want to limit the amount of damage to yourself
during a turn in which you also use a healing item, or when using a special attack such as a freezing
or stealing weapon, in preparation for a more offensive move later. In this way, you can sometimes
outlast your opponent, even one with a greater number of starting Hit Points.

Using dual-duty items in the Battledome:
In addition to basic shields, there are a number of items that combine both offensive with defensive
capabilities. Individually, these weapons tend to be more expensive and less damaging/protective
than either a comparable weapon or simple shield. However, when used in combination with each
other, dual-duty items will often provide the equivalent of having an extra shield in addition to two
offensive weapons. If one is paired with an actual shield, then the weapon can also help defend
against specific icons that the other does not, while still providing some means of attack.

An explanation about the different types of icons:
The majority of Battledome items attack with and/or defend from one or more of seven different
types of icons. Every icon type represents a separate kind of damage and a shield must block the
same icons to be useful for defence. To determine the results of an attack, the number of icons for
each type is multiplied by the attacker's Strength boost, and for those defended against, by the
defender's Defence boost. The total blocked by type is then subtracted from the amounts done with
any positive remainder applied as Hit Points of damage. Other factors, such as which abilities were
used during the turn and special species resistances/weaknesses also effect these calculations.

Icons = Type
= Air
= Darkness
= Earth
= Fire
= Light
= Physical
= Water

An explanation about Strength/Defence boosts:
As you train in either Strength or Defence, you will do or defend more damage only at specific point
values, referred to as boosts. Opponents that have the same boost multipliers, and are equipped
with similar items, are roughly equal in power regardless of the actual point difference between them.

Strength/Defence = Boost Multiplier
0-7 = 0.5
8-12 = 0.75
13-19 = 1.0
20-34 = 1.25
35-54 = 1.5
55-84 = 2.0
85-124 = 2.5
125-199 = 3.0
200-249 = 4.5
250-299 = 5.5
300-349 = 6.5
350-399 = 7.5
400-449 = 8.5
450-499 = 9.75
500-549 = 11.0
550-599 = 12.0
600-649 = 13.0
650-699 = 14.0
700+ = 15.0

How to use the Battledome item tables:
The tables below list some of the most commonly available non-fragile, multiple-use shields and
dual-duty items. Many others exist, but either cost more for the same or worse amount of defence,
defend too little to be very useful or can only be used by certain species. Most can be found priced
at under one million NP. Some have been included here for the benefit of those who won them as
game/plot prizes. By selecting one or more items with the appropriate sets of icons, you may devise
an effective defensive strategy based on the opponent's anticipated attacks and within your own
particular budget. All item statistics are courtesy of IDB, the In-Depth Battlepedia.

NOTE: The standard icons shown assume evenly matched opponents (Strength vs. Defence) and
might vary in number from those listed. Also, some of the items actually attack/defend less than the
full icon amount displayed. This is particularly true of those listing a variable range of possible icons.
