Well hello there! Welcome to the Shooting Range. Here we few skilled archers come daily to test our bows in practice. Ever since the war, we're always on the ready. But you didn't come here to hear about the war, did you guest? No. Have you come for a shot at the range?" You shake your head no. "Oh! You must've come for what the tourists always come for... oh, sorry. That was terribly impolite, wasn't it?" Lel hangs his head in disappointment at himself and sighs deeply. You pat him on the shoulder awkwardly and give him a smile. Encouraged, he continues on. "People always like to come and visit my directories of archery. It's quite large. Would you like to see it?" he asks eagerly. You nod, smile, and then follow the Eyrie to a medium sized building not far from the range. He opens the door, and to your wondering eyes appears a huge room full of all things archery. You begin to look around eagerly...

So. I'll bet you're wondering why I like archery the way I do. I mean, look at me; I'm a Maraquan Eyrie, really! So what's a fellow like me doing shooting arrows around? Well, I can't really explain it. I've always been different and shown promise. So far as I know I'm the only Maraquan Eyrie born with hind legs. One day I just picked up a Maractite bow one day and sent it off into the abyss when I was just a small boy. Poledra, Ce'Niedra's petpet Crokabek, tells me that it was my destiny. (She's no ordinary Crokabek.) As I grew older, I grew stronger and more skilled with bows. Soon I could keep enough food on my family's table for three families! It was splendid the amount they all lavished on me. But one day a crazy old storyteller told me about a world "up there" called Neopia, a place with creatures that walked on legs like mine and many wonders. I was excited at this news, but was told that it was the lie of an insane old man. Little oceanlings were told that there was either nothing above water or that it was so horrible and uncivilzed that if we went on land we'd be gobbled up. And believe me, that was PLENTY of warning for me! But I grew curious, and the ocean wasn't nearly as fun as it once had been. So a friend of mine, Berentain, and I set out for the surface. We were seperated in a giant whirlpool (neither of us had bothered to check the weather) and I was washed up on land. I never heard anything of Berentain again. I cried for a while, but soon the land began to look interesting, and I strung my bow and set off into the forests which I had washed up on the mouth of. I found them much to my liking. That's how I came to find my home in Brightvale. Here we are ruled over by our wise king, King Hagan. It's a good thing he's wise, because most of us aren't too bright. I have a hard time thinking before I act. But I love Brightvale with its forests and friendly villagers and Ultimate Bullseye only a league away. I don't stay there though, since being in the service of Princess Ce'Niedra. I'm her Official Bowman, but that's just a fancy title for a man who rides with her and points his bow at people. I like to take jobs every now and then, jobs that take me all over Neopia. I like to stay Maraquan to remember where I come from, but in my eyes Brightvale will always be my home. ![]()
Adopted Adoptables Here are some adoptables I've collected. Don't they look oddly familiar? ;D
Regular: If you have Eyrie adoptables (and especially if you do customs) neomail me and I'd be glad to adopt one. ;D
Fanart Here are some pictures that some people have drawn for me. Thank you everyone! I always love fanart.

Torasin & Mimbre Torasin has to be my best friend in the world. He's a great little companion. Urchulls love to be in the woods - they're made for climbing. Tor doesn't mind weeklong bouts in the woods with me. Plus, he's great for chewing out new arrows (an odd talent of his) and getting old ones quickly. He loves to play Battle, a game where I often get hurt. We just face eachother, waiting for the other to make a move, until one of us lunges at the other and tries to gain an advantage. I know what you're thinking. He's just a tiny little Urchull! You already HAVE the advantage! But you're wrong, oh so wrong. He's very sneaky and quick and most times wins with his claws about my throat. Then he'll scramble around the trees, squeaking with delight. He likes to travel in my cape's hood when it's not covering my head, in which case he jumps from tree to tree. It must have been during one of these bouts that he picked up Mimbre, his Fleaf, because all of a sudden he just had a new little friend. Mimbre is very useful with spying. Torasin can usually get very close, but Mimbre is totally camoflaged and can sit right on their clothes. Tor can usually be kept busy by Mimbre, which I'm thankful for at times. I don't know what I'd do without Tor, though. Tor would also like to let all of Neopia know that he is deeply offended that all these different petpets get a T-shirt with their face on them, but there is no I *heart* Urchulls shirt. He's decided to make a design and publish it himself. Here it is:

In my household, we're a rather odd bunch. The home acts more as a hostel than anything. Ce'Niedra has duties elsewhere and I accompany her. We call eachother brothers and sisters only because we are friends. We come from all different parts and have many different interests and duties. When we're together it's fun, but we'll never really be family. We prefer to call eachother housemates.

This is the story of how I came to be a part of this home.
Holding his breath, Ellisten the Maraquan Eyrie, a master bowman, peered cautiously around the tree he was hiding behind, his arrow half drawn on his bow. He shifted restlessly to his other foot. It had been almost an hour. Where was she already? His mood lifted slightly as he remembered the sack of 10,000 NP the Darigan Bruce had given him to complete the job. The instructions had been simple. All he had to do was wait for the procession of the Princess Ce?Niedra of Sakhmet to pass on her trip to Qasala and make sure that she didn't reach her destination. The job seemed simple enough, and he needed the money, no matter how disconcerted the Bruce had made him feel. Besides, he was from Brightvale, what did he care about a Sakhmet princess? He waited. Torasin, his Urchull, gave a slight chattering sound from up in the branches of the strange desert trees they had taken refuge in. This Lost Desert really was a strange place. Ellisten found that he really didn't much care for the sparse oasises that were the only vegetation here. His thoughts straightened out as Torasin chattered again, slightly annoyed this time. It was the signal: the Princess was close. He drew his arrow a bit tighter. In practically level desert, one sees a party long before they can hear it. Faintly now, though, Ellisten started to hear the soft padding of hooves on sand. He peered back from around his tree, anticipation all over his open face. The party was no more than 100 yards away. He watched intently as they drew closer. In the lead there was an extremely large and fierce looking Lupe with a Kougra who looked slightly sulky in his saddle by his side, and behind them was the Imperial Princess of Sakhmet, Ce?Niedra, a Royal Girl Korbat, accompanied by a Royal Girl Eyrie. The princess was stunning with her hair flaming in the desert sunlight and a circlet of gold oak leaves atop her head. She looked positively regal and rode on her Uni as if she was used to constant pampering. A White Crokabek perched on her shoulder. Ellisten waited for the best shot. When they were finally close enough that he could hear their conversation, he decided that it was time. He checked his fletching, drew his bow, aimed for the princess's heart, and let his arrow fly. The great Lupe lifted his ear, then suddenly cried, "Look out!" and raised his shield to protect the princess. The arrow shattered on his shield even as he drew his great broadsword. Desperately, Ellisten took aim again and once more the arrow shattered futilely against the shield. Ellisten let out a hiss between his teeth, then turned and flung himself into the saddle of his Uni and kicked at its haunches. Torasin jumped from the tree and onto his shoulder, then barried himself in the hood of Ellisten's cape. His Uni sped off out of the trees. The Lupe gave a war cry, and then plunged after him across the desert land, the princess, attendant, and the now alert Kougra close behind. Ellisten fled with all the speed he could get out of his Uni, painfully aware of the toll this must be taking on his already tired steed. But he sped on, the dust kicking out from behind them. The Lupe grew slowly closer, and the chase lasted only about 5 minutes. There weren't many places to hide in the Lost Desert. As the Lupe drew in beside him, he grabbed Ellisten's reigns and pulled his horse to a stop. In a last attempt, Ellisten threw himself off his Uni and tried to run, but just then the Kougra, attendant, and princess who had been following close behind came up and the Kougra cut off all means of escape. "Where do you think you're going?" the Lupe asked contemptuously. Ellisten cried with despair and drew his sword to fall on it. Oh no you don't," the little princess stated, grabbing his cloak from behind. Her grip was surprisingly strong as she whipped him around to face her. She was a very petite girl, no more than 16 years old, but an infuriated fire burned in her eyes that would make even Lord Darigan tremble. As Ellisten looked down at her, his eyes grew wide with fear, and he dropped to his knees. Please your Majesty, don't take me back to Sakhmet. I'll fall on my sword right here in the desert, right now before your eyes. Just don't take me back to be tortured, please!" he begged. Don't be ridiculous," she stated firmly. "You won't kill yourself, nor will you return to Sakhmet for torture." She turned to the Lupe then. "Barak, I want this man's Uni watered and him fed. He'll be coming with us to Qasala. He has an excellent shot." The Lupe stared at her in horror. "But Princess Ce?Niedra, this man tried to murder you. He's no doubt hired assassination scum," he spat. He glared at Ellisten. Ce?Niedra's eyes filled with the fire again, and her jaw set warningly. She stared at the Lupe until he finally looked away. "Yes your Majesty," he said politely, though the gaze he directed at Ellisten was anything but polite. "Garion!" he bellowed at the Kougra, "Fetch this man's Uni some water from the packs. Garion grumbled slightly under his breath, but did what he was told. ?Ce?Niedra, are you sure this is wise?? the lady Eyrie asked the princess. They were obviously very well acquainted. The lady looked worried. Ellisten noticed for the first time how lovely she was. ?Of course it is, Ariana. I know what I?m doing. We?ll be safe. What is your name?" Ce?Niedra asked Ellisten, now directing her gaze into his face. He shuddered inwardly, then swallowed his fear and answered in no more than a whisper, "Ellisten." Lellisten?" the princess asked incredulously, a slightly amused look on her face. She laughed suddenly, a rich, high laugh, but with a slight hint of mocking. No, Ellisten. There's no L," he said, suddenly forgetting his fear. He hated when people got his name wrong. Suddenly remembering who he spoke to, he groaned and dropped his head, sure that now he was in for. No one spoke back to royalty. But Ce?Niedra only laughed harder at that, her face growing red. "I think I like Lellisten better. I'll call you Lel." Ariana giggled, and Ellisten flushed at that. As they set off, Lel was asked many questions about his employer by the intimidating Lupe Barak. He tried to answer all his questions, but he found that it was hard to talk to someone so large and aggressive. Finally, the Princess told Barak to stop, and they rode in silence for a while, Garion and Lel in the lead and Barak in the rear, Ce?Niedra in the middle of them. As Lel started talking to Garion, he realized that he was about the same age as the princess. Lel was a few years older than both of them. After a few leagues, he surmised that perhaps this trip wouldn't be as horrible as he had thought, except for the glares directed at him by Barak. That was getting old.

History Many Neopians don't know it, but archery is more than just pulling a string and letting an arrow loose. It has much more involved than that. The earliest bows were made of things like wood, reed, and animal horns and probably strung with animal gut (odd choice). These eventually developed into longbows and short bows. There are two basic kinds of bows, wooden and composite. Crossbows were also used, but they are mounted horizontally instead of up and down like other bows. It has a trigger and uses bolts instead of arrows. They aren't usually included in archery. All sorts of cultures have used bows. Wooden bows were used in Western Europe, Iceland, most Africa, India, the island groups of the Indian and Pacific oceans, and large parts of North and South America. Composite bows were used in some parts of Eastern Europe and North America, isolated parts of South America, and exclusively through what is now Russia and China, the northern half of North America, and coastal Greenland.

Choosing Your Bow There are 7 bows that are typically used today - recurve, reflex, self, straight, longbow, composite, and compound. Recurve bow : Often made of more than one material, either laminated carbon or fiberglass, with the tips curving away from the archer. This is a good bow for beginners. Reflex bow : Sometimes mixed up with the recurve, the reflex bow curves completely away from the archer when unstrung Self bow : Made from one material, usually wood, fairly straight Straight bow : Nearly completely straight, made of laminated fiberglass or carbon Longbow : Very similar to it?s medieval ancestors, made only of wood with of course a hand grip and/or sight, not considered used by many serious archers Composite bow : Made of more than one material, usually a wooden core, molded fiberglass or carbon, then laminated Compound : Not much different from the recurve, except for pulleys that aid in efficiency and adjustable limbs
Recommended Draw Weights
About Arrows Shooting an arrow is much harder than most people think. It involves much more than just letting go. How far the arrow will go depends on many things, like the bow, the angle it's fired at, how fast the arrow is flying, how much the arrow weighs, the length of the arrow, the length of the fletching, and the height of the fletching. Never knew it was so hard, huh? :P Also, you have to figure out how to get the arrow straight. Here is a checklist to go through before you shoot your arrow.
2. Nock Arrow 3. Set bow hold 4. Set draw hand hook 5. Raise bow and draw 6. Anchor 7. Align sight and level bow 8. Establish string pattern and sight picture 9. Focus, steady, and aim 10. Tighten back muscles 11. Relax draw hand to release 12. Keep bow arm up and steady
Modern Arrows
Proper Maintainence Bow : Never lay the bow on the ground. This can cause damage or ruin sensitive parts of the bow. If the bow gets wet, dry it off right away even if the finish is waterproof. If your bow has metal in it, then the metal will rust and the bow will work poorly. To help preserve the finish on the bow it is advised to use any type of bow wax and rub it on the bow to help keep it?s finish. Bow String : Use bow string wax to keep the string waterproof. This will help keep the string in maximum performance condition and prevent it from becoming tangled. Arrows : An arrow which has even the slightest malfunction can cause unexpected and unwanted results. Always keep the fletching dry. If they do get wet, spread out the feathers and let them dry completely.
Helpful Reading I'm sure that all of this physics stuff is messing with your head (I know it does mine), so here are some books my owner told me about that can help if you want to learn more.

You step out of the building, an awe struck look on your face. It's amazing how much is involved in archery! You never knew. "Did you like it?" Lel asks you as you start back to the range. You can only nod and turn around to look at the building one last time. Maybe one of YOUR pets should start getting into archery. "Well, I must be going. I've lost enough practice time as it is," Lel apologizes. He quickly takes his bow from his back and an arrow from his quiver and shoots with perfect precision at a target. "See you next time guest!" He turns back to his shooting, but then looks back at you like he forgot something. "Oh yes, and don't worry too much about those books," he whispers to you. "I'm not bright enough to read them anyways, and I'm just fine." He winks, then lets loose another arrow. You walk away to the thrum of bow strings and thumps as arrows hit their marks.
