About VicAmes:
Avast, me hearties! My name is VicAmes, Pirate Poogle and proud of it! My whole family is Pirate; in fact, my family calls itself “The Pirate Crew”! Most of us even have Pirate petpets. Mine is a Gruslen I call “Petty Officer Stumpy” – he’s got a wooden leg, so it seems appropriate, don’t you think? Anyway, I enjoy doing all the stuff that Pirates usually like to do - you know, plundering, counting pieces of eight and sailing the high seas – but the one thing that I enjoy above all else is… singing! Most people don’t know this about me, but I have an excellent singing voice. In fact, I perform with the Neopian Philharmonic whenever they need a Tenor for their current stage production. Let me tell you about one memorable performance…
A couple of months ago my brothers and I were preparing to set sail on another one of our periodic raids. We don’t go with the intent of hurting anyone; it’s simply a way for us to keep our Pirate skills sharp. I was tasked with getting the supplies on board, and I was in the process of rolling the last barrel of fresh water up the gangplank when I heard the patter of running feet behind me. I wheeled around quickly – Pirates generally do not like people running up behind them – and I espied the General Manager of the Neopian Performing Arts Theater! Huffing and puffing he grabbed my arm for support as he gasped for air.
“VicAmes, sir, I’m glad I caught you! I’m here on an urgent mission. The male lead in tonight’s performance of ‘Poogle of Krawk Island” has taken ill with a sudden case of Sneezles, and will be unable to perform! We have a sold out show, no male lead and no Understudy! We need your help!”
I nodded quickly in understanding.
“The show must go on, I know. Let me speak to my Captain”. I found my brother Geneames2 at the helm of the ship, and spoke to him regarding the Manager’s request. Geneames2 completely understood; he’s a Pirate through and through but he’s also my brother, and he knew how much this meant to me.
“It’s alright, Vic,” he said firmly. ”Without your help there will be no performance tonight. The tide isn’t coming in until at least 0200; as long as you have the supplies on board your job is done for now. I can spare you for the performance – just make sure you’re back in time to set sail!”
With that I wheeled about quickly and set off for the theater, the Manager staggering along behind me. There was no need for me to learn the part; I’ve performed it several times before. Upon reaching the Concert Hall I made my way backstage. My costume was already waiting for me, and peeking through the curtains that hung in front of the stage I could see the seats were already beginning to fill. The Orchestra was starting to warm up; and as I donned the cape, saber, plumed hat and eye mask that comprised my costume I did vocal scales to loosen up my voice. At last, all was ready. I took my place on stage, and as the curtain slowly rose and the lights dimmed I began to sing:
“”Oh Poogles all, let us rejoice, Krawk Island is our home..”
Two glorious hours later the curtain fell to thunderous applause. The play had been a rousing success, and General Manager Sherk couldn’t have been happier.
“Oh, Mr. VicAmes thank you! Without your help the performance never would have been able to go on. How can I ever repay you?”
I bowed graciously. “By making sure you call whenever I am needed. That is thanks enough”. I glanced at my watch and my eyes widened in alarm. “It’s 0145! We sail in 15 minutes – I don’t mean to be rude, sir, but good night to you”! With those words I ran out of the theater and made my way back to the ship. I ran up the gangplank just as my brother JoeAmes was preparing to pull it in; and as I took my place alongside the Captain he raised an eyebrow at me.
“ So, how did the performance of ‘Poogle of Krawk Island’ go”? He asked casually. I turned to him in surprise.
“Who told you which play we were doing”?
“No-one,” he responded with a slight smile,” the costume you’re wearing kind of gave it away”.
Looking down at myself I felt my cheeks reddening with embarrassment. I had been in such a hurry to leave the Theater I had forgotten to change my clothes! Geneames2 laughed loudly.
“Don’t worry about it, Vic – you can conduct an impromptu performance for us while we sail to our destination”.
“Where is that, Captain”? I asked.
“That,” he replied with a wink ” Is for me to know. Now, how about favoring us with a solo”?
With that, we sailed into the night and another adventure. Anyway, I have to go now – a Pirate’s job is never done. Feel free to drop in anytime to say hello!
