Story Seven Hundred Twenty Seven Ends Friday, April 29

I crouched behind a tree just as I heard footsteps approaching. The sound of hooves on the earth was loud and clear in the evening air and it seemed to be coming ever closer to me. I stilled and held my breath, hoping that the Neopet wouldn't find me.

Fortunately, the sound gradually faded until I could hear no more, the Neopet had probably headed in another direction. Extending my head slightly from the cover that the gnarled tree bark provided, I scanned my surroundings quickly. It appeared to be void of life.

"That was close," I muttered, heaving a deep sigh and sank to the ground. I rested my head on the bark and closed my eyes. I won't go in, I made up my mind; I would just wait out here.

It was probably only a few minutes when somebody woke me up all of a sudden. "Hey! Who's there?" I choked, flailing my right paw in order to try to shake off the arm of whoever had grasped my paw. When I opened my eyes, I groaned. A speckled Ruki was peering at me. It was Kevin. He had found me.

"Kevin, let go of me! I told you I wouldn't visit that place," I voiced out, still shaking my arm vigorously but to no avail. He had a really strong grip.

"Come on, we're already on the outskirts," he pleaded. "Please Brenda, I really need to do something. You shouldn't be scared. You're a Mutant Blumaroo!"

Without waiting for a reply, he hoisted me up and started dragging me to the entrance of the Haunted Woods. I resisted, of course, but my futile efforts only left a carved trail of dirt behind me which was caused by my feet.

"I have a bad feeling about this," I uttered for the umpteenth time as I was tugged helplessly towards the Woods. Just days ago, I had been informed by my brother not to step foot into the land because of recent strange happenings. I had tried to convey the message to Kevin but he was intent on getting this 'thing' done ...

"Oh relax, will you?" Kevin said, trotting down the path through the woods while still dragging Brenda behind him. "Yeah, it's scary. It's supposed to be. But there's nothing that dangerous around here except for Meepits, and as long as we stick to the path, we'll be fine."

Brenda really started to drag her heels into the ground as they went deeper, leaving a trail behind them as the gnarled trees seemed to grow more sinister the deeper they went.

"You don't have to do this!" Brenda said.

"Please, how often does Edna give out a quest?" Kevin replied.

"Literally all the time!" The mutant protested, "It's literally all she does is give out quests!"

"Well not for something as important as this!" Kevin replied.

"You're being played Kevin!" Brenda shouted, and started to struggle harder to break free from her brother's grip.

After one more hard pull, I was finally able to break free from Kevin's grip. I tumbled for a bit before rolling off to the side.

"Brenda!" Kevin said, "Are you okay?"

I was deathly silent as I saw something in the ground.

"No...we are not okay..."

"Brenda, can you just calm down? There's nothing here! NOTHING!!!", Kevin said as he dangerously raised his voice.

"SHUSH KEVIN!" I whispered, "I just saw something reflected in the puddle! Please. Just let me go and we can safely head back! I promise, I'll act like nothing ever happened and we'll just go home..."

"Oh come on, you never want to do anything. Stop making up lies! If we can just complete this quest for Edna, imagine the reward we'll reap!" Kevin bellowed in the deadly silence of the woods.

The message was just not getting through to this ruki and I was starting to get fed up from bickering and from shaking from fear. But still, I got up on my feet and tried to persuade him once again.

"It's not that simple, Kevin. Do you really think she'll give someone like us, a task that...,"

Speechless and weak in the knees, I sunk to the ground. My eyes were fixated forward. I saw it. I know I saw it. There was definitely something there...

The puddle rippled. I saw the water quake and tremble, and I knew it wasn't from my knocking knees.

"Kevin..." I warned, but something in his demeanor changed. His speckles blended into an ashen cast as he gaped at something behind me.

With a gulp he said, "Brenda... take a step towards me, don't turn around."

Ignoring my gut, I turned expecting the worst. My teeth were chattering like the bones on a transparent aisha, when all of a sudden...

"BOO!" I jumped out of my skin and turned to see my brother rolling on the ground laughing, "you really are too gullible sis. C'mon, we have work to do."

I brushed imaginary dust off my shoulder, and as I turned back to the Ruki. I saw my worst nightmare...

He was gone and I was utterly alone in the clearing.

“Kevin,” I hissed, knowing he must have slipped in between some of the spindly branches and their dark hue was simple hiding him from view. “This isn’t funny. This isn’t even going to be funny when we tell this story a few months from now.”

I took a few haphazard steps and saw a flash of green.

“Wait up!” I cried, already imagining the clobbering I would induce upon his shoulder for leaving me behind. I barreled through the trees, watching as the subtle flickers of green disappeared as fast as I caught sight of them. Why was he running from me?

I paused, hoping to hear the unmistakable crunch of leaves that might signal his direction, but all was quiet again. “Kevin?” I said meekly, but there was no response.

Then I heard it. Rustling through the brush ahead of me. A figured slowly emerged, but it wasn’t my brother...

Instead, a mysterious green Ixi stood before me, her hideous patched-up clothes brimmed with extraordinary power and magic. When I glanced at her flowing emerald locks and peered into her yellow eyes, I recognized in an instant who she was.

"Sophie! What have you done with my brother?"

"I bound him with a spell. What are YOU TWO doing here?"

In that moment I realized that there was a high possibility that Kevin and I had accidentally ventured into Sophie's part of the woods. Seeing her distrustful glare confirmed my suspicions.

"Where are you keeping my brother?" I said, trying to get a feel for the witch's intentions.

"Oh, he's right here," and with a snap of her fingers, a green billow of smoke appeared and upon its dissipation, I saw Kevin standing right beside her unable to move an inch.

"Now tell me why you're here," Sophie said.

"We're on a quest for Edna!" I blurted out. Unable to keep my thoughts calm and my voice steady, I looked over at Kevin who looked equally as nervous. This whole adventure had landed us in a huge mess. But maybe there was a way out...

An intrigued smile flashed across Sophie's lips. Her sharp eyes were teeming with curiosity.

"Oh? And what is it that you are searching for...?

I hesitated and then glanced at my brother. He hadn't actually told me what exactly Edna's quest was. But I had a feeling that answer wasn't going to fly with Sophie.

"We're looking for... a Wartroot" I quickly invented.

Sophie looked down at me, unimpressed. It was plain that she knew I wasn't telling the truth. Could she read minds? Surely not.

"Actually, yes I can," said Sophie, serenely.

I stared at her, disbelieving. Was she actually answering my thoughts?

"Yes, of course I am, you doofus," she said, "and because I know that you can't answer my question, I have a proposition to make you..."

She left the sentence hanging. I looked fearfully up at her, wondering what she had in mind.

"Ordinarily, I wouldn't allow trespassers into my realm to leave unscathed," she proclaimed.

I swallowed nervously. I was all too aware of that.

"But," Sophie continued, "I may be willing to make an exception today... If you do a little something for me...

..."What?" I asked, my quivering voice betraying my outward attempt at fearlessness.

Sophie withdrew a small glass vial from her pocket, filled with green liquid. "Give this to Edna."

Really? It was that easy?

"Yes," Sophie replied. I started. "Mind reader, remember?"

"What about Kevin?" I inquired with a pleading frown.

Sophie folded her arms together. "I will release him after you deliver that to Edna. I'll know when you've done so because I just will... mind reader and all that." She glanced at Kevin. "You may meet him at the gates to the Haunted Woods." She nodded at the brother.

The swamp witch then shoved me away. "Now, shoo," she said, "fulfil this quest of mine and don't come back."

"Yes Ma'am," I replied hastily and went off.

***

"Ah, Sophie's Elixir of Smiting," Edna said upon inspection of the vial I'd just given her. "Excellent!" And then she cackled.

I grinned wearily. And then I realized... this must have been the item we were supposed to get her. "I'm glad you like it!"

"Now begone!" she said with a scowl before adjusting her hat.

I hurried out the door of the stone tower.

***

At the gates of the Haunted Woods, I grinned. There was Kevin!

"Kevin!" I exclaimed as I went to hug him.

"Brenda!" he said back. "Thank Fyora I finished the quest."

I paused. "Wait, what?"

"The quest for Edna ended up being me bringing something to Sophie," the Ruki replied. "Edna said that when it was done you would be released and I could find you at the Gates of the Woods."

I was confused. "I saw you at Sophie's though..."

"Odd," Kevin replied. "All the same she probably could have conjured my likeness. She's good at witchery."

I realized then that clearly we'd been played. Edna had asked Kevin to deliver Sophie something, and I'd been asked by Sophie to deliver something to Edna... all for the promise of safe return of our sibling.

Witches be clever.

"I'm just glad you're safe," Kevin said back.

"Yeah, and I to you."

Happily, we walked out of the Haunted Woods. "Let's not come back any time soon," I said.

"Awww."

"...Fine then Kevin, for you. Maybe."

***

Odd things were happening in the woods.

Sophie and Edna... colluding? This couldn't be good.

"Ah, wonderful," Sophie said to the quester who brought her the vial she'd sent to Edna, now filled with an even stronger, more crushing elixir made from her one of Smiting.

She smiled and thought of Edna cackling; the latter which certainly would after Sophie made the next enhancement. "Soon the trees will do our bidding..."

THE END
